Open Source?

Post by delatbabel »

If the version 4 or whatever isn't going to be released by Matrix or 2x3 or whoever any time soon, perhaps it's time to open source the game? Especially since it's being given away. Then someone else could pick it up, some coders from the open source community could be found, and we'd have an updated game.

Good, so that the ridiculous aircraft and StuG replacement bugs can be fixed.

There are a bunch of bugs that need fixing. In fact (in my capacity as a software developer) I'm wondering how much effort a re-write would take. Certainly the research done by possum and others towards fixing the OBs would be useful, as well as fixing things like replacement bugs, air defence & other issues, making a better scaled map, etc.

It would make sense to release as open source if they or someone else was NOT planning on trying to make more $$ off it. I guess an alternative would be to purchase the rights yourself and turn around and make it open source. An act of pure philanthropy.

It is frustrating to see something that seems so ripe for the picking yet because of other priorities, won't get the attention we want it to have.
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.
