Thanks for reply Hard Sarge. That choice is only in Geosscape. When on a mission (sorry I used Tactical), there is a button on the left that allows you return to menu, but for the life of me I cannot save in mission. Hitting 'enter' after typing in save name won't do anything. I don't reload saves, preferring 'ironman' rules, but my playstyle is slow and deliberate, so I do not want to play through a mission without the possibility to save. I am having no problem saving when in Geoscape.

Massattack, use the numbers keypad "enter" instead. Works for me, anyway. But of note, I'm also using sagerXCom03 mod, so don't know if that makes difference or not.

Sorry my bad

I meant the left :)

yea, go to menu

click on save, click on the slot you want to save to, type in new name or keep the old name and then click enter, it takes a few seconds, and then returns to the menu page, then click on return to mission

I noticed that a "Save Complete" dialog would have been very helpful in that area. I believe a overwrite confirmation is also standard practice (which there is none).

Many thanks, I had tried just that and for some reason it did not take. I then tried Miller Time's suggestion of using the 'enter' key from the numpad, and it worked. I am also using Sage's mod. Anyway, problem sorted, thanks both of you for your help. I am new to this genre, never having had a computer during the xcom days, and really having a blast with this title.

The problem with not being able to use Enter is fixed in the newest release of the mod- the hotkey mod we were using was updated to fix that bug.
