What happened?

Post by pzpat »

I opened 1.916d and looked around. What happened to the ANV's cavalry? It was my main defense against the AOP, and now they're gone. Not just one brigade, which I could understand, but I'm down six brigades. What happened? It shouldn't have been done in the name of play balance, because the greater ranges of infantry weapons in the new version should substantially lessen the power of cavalry with carbines.

I also noticed that Ewell no longer taught oblique fire, and in fact no one on either side did. So I opened a new game with the same result, and it wasn't until the fourth time I opened the game that Ewell regained his ability to teach oblique fire. I didn't keep track of other abilities (I'm not that anal). Have the generals' teaching abilities been randomized?

And Berdan's Sharpshooters have the Sharps rifle before that advance has been researched. Was that done on purpose?

For the South it won't be realistic to say you can replace the cavalry within a short time. The first turn's resources go to arming the ANV, the second turn's to arming the troops in the west, the next to the British, all the while trying to save money for camps and research buildings. You have to build at least one unit of siege artillery to have any offensive credibility in the west, and the lead time for that means you have to start building as soon as possible. And then there's arming the troops that you muster. Any chance in the next version of the possibility of mustering cavalry if you have the horses?

I have to thank you for the extra artillery. But what happened to my cavalry? [&:]

Regarding the Sharps guns, that's a question for Eric (or Erik). As for the cavalry issue, I have to echo Walloc and ask which scenario you're playing. My guess is that it's the July one, in which case Hampton's Legion, which previously was cavalry, has been converted to infantry with brigade cavalry, since that's more accurate.

Regarding Ewell and Oblique Fire, I'm glad you pointed this out -- in my master file, I had him down for Fast, Shooters and Oblique Fire, but in the actual game files I forgot to enter those, so Ewell was getting three randomized abilities. I've just fixed it.

"Researching" a gun really represents making it part of the national standard armament - the majority of these guns already existed, just not for any kind of mass production and were not integrated into the logistics chain. Berdan's Sharpshooters actually went outside the normal logistics chain when formed and Berdan got all of them Sharps rifles, so having them start with those is historical.

As for the cavalry, which scenario? If it's the revised Southern Steel, I'd guess some were reduced when the historical force sizes were implemented. It could be worth a second look to see if they should get a cavalry brigade instead of an infantry brigade. If you were looking at Coming Fury, the change to Hampton's Legion (which was a historical change) is the only reduction to cavalry I can recall.

Note also that you can muster infantry, then immediately purchase two brigade cavalry attributes for them, thus converting them to Cavalry. It's not that expensive, works out much cheaper than building cavalry (but you get very untrained cavalry).

It's Southern Steel.  And the immediate result of making Berdan's Sharpshooters so outstanding relative to the other units was that in the battle of Frederickburg in Nov '61 I made sure that I located the brigade and stayed pretty close but not too close to it until the Union broke, and then I made sure that it surrendered.  I'm hoping that the bug where surrendered AI units reappear immediately has been fixed.  But when Berdan's surrendered I didn't get their rifles, too bad.
Does this (Ewell's teaching abilities) mean that we will be getting a 1.916e?

No, minor changes to generals' abilities aren't worth all the trouble. People can make the changes themselves through modding. Or, if there's a demand, I can post the most recent versions of the generals' files. But no need for Erik to spend all that time on a new installation build.
