Its a new movie that started on the 12th. Its called "I will go to my death for you". Its about Kamikazes (well..technically I think its about Army suicide pilots..Tokko). The woman is supposed to be a woman who ran an inn/drinking house near the Army's main TOKKOU base in southern Japan.

How much do you want me to translate..?

Thank you very much!!!

Is there a lot of info (i.e. us without Japanese idiom knowledge have no sense whatsoever how much text there is in a first place)?

This could be based on a true story. There was a famous inn called Tomya Shokudo near the Chiran tokko base in the Kagoshima area. The proprietress, Tome Torihama, was kind of like a mom to all the Japanese pilots there. Her daughter's recollections of that time are included in "Blossoms in the Wind" by M. G. Sheftall, an excellent book about the kamikaze program based on interviews with survivors of the various programs.

There is plenty of drama there for a movie, including Tome Torihama being arrested by the kempeitai and rescued by a band of pilots. Does that sound like the basis for this movie, Vetamur?

Thats sort of what I was referring to when I mentioned her..just not very clearly.  And that book is informative, but Im not sure I would call it "excellent"..

And its a Japanese movie in 2007..so..it will most likely not mention things like the arrest, or anything like that. Its going to be an over sentimental program, white washing all context and focusing on the pilots doing things purely for their mothers, lovers, etc.  The "YOU" in Japanese that is used is a familiar you.. its not talking about the country or the Emperor or anything..

Im going to watch it. Perhaps tomorrow. But I know I will be disappointed.

Because here they cant just make a good war movie. Did you see "OTOKOTACHI NO YAMATO?" From the minute I saw the title I knew it would disappoint, and it did. The Yamato has a good enough story in itself that you could make a great movie from it. But no. The movie makers had to put in the 2007 spin on it. Instead of it being a movie about frustrated crew on a ship that is the namesake of the nation itself being unable to get into a losing war because the precepts that their ship was built on were wrong (and using this as a metaphor for the precepts the WAR was started on being wrong...).. it was a movie about an overbearing officer being mean as opposed to some other nice guys on the ship.. for the most part. The war is in the background and the crew comes together for their final cruise. blahblahblah.

This new movie could be all about the Tokko pilots.. you could have the core of them being college students who dont believe in the nationalism stuff but do believe that they have a duty.. you could have the experienced pilot heart broken over what has become of "his" great air armada of 1941 as it declines to airplanes that wont start in 1945.. you could have the hand wringing in the army and navy over whether suicide missions were ethical (and there was a debate)..

but no. Its going to be emotionally overwrought simplistic drivel, somewhat mitigated by attention to detail that at least for the first time will show younger audiences that once upon a time Japanese men were truly men, that the country had some (misguided) nationalism...not the (and I hate to say it) spineless, feminized country of today.

Yeah.. I watched it twice (no, not because it was great.. I just tend to see movies twice for whatever reason).
Its not bad..but its just very obvious that Eastwood didnt have the same feel for the movie as he did with Flags of Our Fathers.  And clearly he took a lot of "advice" from the Japanese.  Flags told the story straightforward. Basically true story.  Letters from Iwo Jima centers on two fictional characters, "good guys" from a 2007 perspective and tells the story in fits. You are sort of left with the impression that the battle was about 2 days long.

Well..Im picky I guess..

Me thinks the world could use a few more "feminized" countries.....

You think that because you havent lived here and watched men putting on make up on the train, plucking their eye brows, have a widespread problem of "mother complexes", etc. Im not talking about demilitarization, I am talking about the whole sale destruction of most forms of expression of masculine expression within a society which even the women acknowledge.

Well, you've got me there. Still, it is preferable behavior to strapping themselves to flying bombs. IMHO.

Doing your duty is ALWAYS honorable...just the form that duty takes sucks alot of times...

doing ones duty is an honor. But there are often cases of misplaced senses of duty.

Vetamur-

The format your describing for the the Army Sucide piolets movie could describe a lot of War Movies made in the states over the past 60 some odd years (or longer), so in this regard I dont think Japan has a monolopy on such things. I dont mean to try and justify the producers deschion or anything, but mearly to note that it is a form of intertainment, made for consumption to apeal to a wide enough base to turn a profit, a lot like some war games. The only realy sad thing is that some folks who dont know better might mistake what they see for real history and come away not realy learnig  anything or worse perhas the wrong thing.
