Hello,my user name is edward,I prefer to go by boomboom.I hope a moderator will see this and change my user name.I stumbled on to this site about a month ago.Took me this long to figure out how to post.I must say what a well read and knowledgable bunch you folks you are.Yes I can't wait for uv to be realeased.I read a book called the first team, about carrier fighters in the first six months of the pacific war. This was mentioned in the winp form thought I'd mention it here.Boomboom thinks I'll be easy meat for some pbm games.Any one looking for an easy w can play me.Again I'm glad I finnaly figured out how to post. When you play uv as the American DO NOT send the North Carolina in harm's way.If you are the ijn let it get away.Boomboom daddy served on her.If the North Carolina is sunk,no boomboom.
I'm boomboom.I don't want to control the sea.I ain't no calvery general[horses stink].I don't want to fight the next world war.I want to go back to dog patch, and fall in love.

Welcome. Very interesting about the North Carolina.

I once met an electrician as a boy that was doing some work on an addition to my grandparents home. As a young kid, I hung out and watched him work and we talked. It turned out that he repaired aviation radios aboard a Carrier(don't remember which one) in the pacific. He told me that it was amazing how shot up some of the planes were and still made it back. He seemed to think that alot of the U.S. planes that did go down were due to the pilot being hit rather than the actual plane no longer being able to fly. He also cited that some got lost, ran out of fuel..etc. and had to ditch.

Apparently his carrier was hit and his second tour was cut short as they had to return to the mainland for repairs. He seemed to have been glad to get back when he did.

On another note he also spoke of seeing a virtual wall of AAA tearing Jap planes apart. He said the AAA was extremely effective. He mentioned seeing escort ships fill the sky with lead.

As far as air combat effectiveness, he mainly talked about fixing the planes. He also stated that unless they really got hit hard they would usually repair the deck and be back in action fairly fast. I'm assuming this is because of the wooden american deck??

Anyway, I wish I would have thought to write down or record some of the details he told me back then. No doubt he has probably passed away by now since that had to be over 20 years ago that I spoke to him. However, as a boy his accounts of battle were very interesting and I hung out and spoke with him until he finished the electrical work on my Grandmothers new kitchen.

North Carolina

Thanks for the welcome. The North Carolina is a bb not a carrier. My dad was on board when she had a torp put into her by an ijn sub.Almost killed him.Same sub also in the same action sunk the carrier Wasp, cut the dd O'banion in half.Later in one of the naval battles off Guadalcanal same sub caught the ca Hellana limpping away and finished her off.The five Sullivan brothers were on board and none surived. The North Carolina was known as the Showboat, probly because she was built in New York city.First bb to be built that was able to keep up with the carriers,as the older bb were to slow. One of these years I'm going to Willimgton N.C and visit. As I am already past the big five O,something I should do soon.Any more info on the Showboat would be appricated
