Need Information on World Port Sizes

Post by hueglin »

I am working on a mod that covers the western world and am looking for information on port sizes - preferably in the 1900 - 1914 period, but any time period would be a help.

The map covers all of Europe, Africa, South and Central America, Western North America, the Middle East and India.

Any help would be most welcome.

what is a port size?

This is a problem.

WITP does not relate port size to number of docks, quays, anchor points, or ships which can be handled at one time - nor to the size of the ship that can be serviced. Since that is what real port size means - it is hard to get this right.

Port sizes in WitP range from "0" to "10"

0 - undeveloped (essentially beach)

10 - Fully developed large port. Usually also contains a shipyard. Size 10 cannot be "built" too during game play but must be set in the editor. Examples of such would be "Pearl Harbor"

Sizes 1-9 of course are in between. To disband any TF's into the port hex, a minimum size of 3 is required. Capital ship reloading requires min size 5. Mine/sub torp reloading (without tender) requires size 8.

Use these benchmarks when determining your port sizes. Keep in mind also that the bigger the port the faster the load/unload rate per ship and the better able the port is to repair damage intrinsically.

Within that scale, the effects of port size involve repair rates and loading/unloading, for the most part on a ship-by-ship basis without considering gross port capacity.

Oh, yes, TFs cannot disband in ports of size 0-2, and torpedo nets require a port of size 3 or greater.

already mentioned....yes.

Size =>3 will only protect against sub torpedoes if disbanded. Air launched torpedoes can still strike ships disbanded in port.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Would it be fair to assume that the following ports would be size 10?
London, Liverpool, Southampton, Marseilles, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Danzig (Gdansk), Leningrad, Antwerp, Genoa, Venice, Trieste, Lisbon, Cadiz, Belfast, Athens, Salonika (Thessalonika), Constantinople (Istanbul), Alexandria, Odessa.

Ideas for additions or deletions are welcome.

Most modders use Size 10 very sparingly. Alexandria and Trieste for example in WitM, are not size 10 (but Taranto is)

Size 9 is used more often for very large ports with size 10 reserved for those locations that contain large shipyards.

Just general guidelines of course.
