Failure to start due to default language setting (multibyte language environment)

Post by tailblues »

(For your information who tries to run UFO:ET in windows environment of multibyte/non-english languages. )

I could not start up the UFO:ET, as soon as it starts, it kicked back to windows. With some investigation, I could find out the reason.

---

The problem was something with langauge/charset.In windows control panel, you can set your default language for non-unicode programs. If that default language is set to some language that uses more than 1 byte per character(namely, Chinese, Japanese or Korean, and anything like that) UFO:ET fails to start. This is reproducable 100% : if your windows is something like CJK(Chinese, Japanses, Korean), UFO:ET fails to start.

I firmly believe this is a bad BUG. Anyhow, In such a case, You can change your default language to English, and it runs well. I think UFO:ET execution file is NOT a proper unicode program. Hope this helps someone. This bug put me into an hour of frustration before I sorted it out.

Just the same problem!

Hi tailblues,

The problem I have been facing was just the same.
UFO never starts under Japanese Vista.
With 100% recurrence, It fails with an error message like this : the program attempted an inapropriate action to Visual C++ runtime library.
I didn't imagine what I saw was the same thing I went through when I was playing foreign games under windows 95 about a decade ago.
Locale thing is such an old story for me, who plays at least one new foreign game per month.
I think gamers play games they like regardless their language or nationality.
So developers must test their products under multilingual environment...IMHO
I'd like to say we are not beta testers!

Anyway, your comment was a great help for me to solve problem instantly.
Thank you!
