Japanese type 96 torpedo bomber

Post by m10bob »

If any Japanese plane slots were free, I would like to see this one as it was still carrier deployed into 1942 and very active off the coast of India aboard at least the Ryujo, and other of the smaller carriers.

You're talking about the Jean, right?

That's already in the stock game, though for some reason not deployed. I'm using it in my personal mod.

I think RHSCVO cames with them in some CVL's at war start.

According to Niehorster, only the Hosho carried any Jeans on 12/7. The Zuiho carried B5M "Mabels". The Ryujo carried Kates.

This aircraft was relegated to land based use by the time the US got in the war. It is present as a dual aircraft in RHS - the types are combined so you don't lose any plane counts in your units.

See Japanese Naval Aces and Fighter Units and World War II (which mentions the units because they had fighter elements) and Francillon - who treats them as a secondary type. Not that either is error free - but they are not bad places to start. No - unqualified - with no pointer to some reason to think otherwise - isn't really helpful.

The reason I even considered this old biplane,(aside from its' relation to another old bipe, the Swordfish), was that it is mentioned as being the agressive component on the Ryujo during the Indian ocean forays between Madras and Calcutta, sinking approx 55 ships, whilst the "big boys" were out searching for Somerville's main surface/carrier forces.
The "Claude" was the ships' fighter element.

This is in TITANS OF THE SEAS, James and William Belote,1975...(An excellent narrative of carrier development and operations concerning WWII )

BTW, I have seen other sources which indicated the escort carriers already had Kate aircraft at this time as well, so its' a matter of who did the better research?
For these smaller and older flat-tops, with limited range, I'm gonna guess they did not have the priority for newer planes that the larger, newer ships had..

That, plus size and allocation of torpedoes would also be an issue. As you're aware, the smaller carriers didn't have torpedoes allocated for their Kates...

I did not know that, but it also helps explain why the same book datails half of the Kates being used for high altitude bombing, in early campaigns, (including Pearl Harbor!).
