Naval?

Post by JudgeDredd »

There is precious little in the manual about naval units...so I have a question...

I'm playing through BoA 1776 Montcalm scenario as the Brits. I have 4 fleets of Bateux (spelling?) in Phildelphia. I want to move them north to Sable Cape (Annapolis Royal?), so they can transport troops..but they WILL NOT GO. The message says something like
"This region cannot be entered: At least one of your units cannot enter this location and something about Shallow water...but no matter where I try to move this fleet, I am told I cannot move it there and it's the same message.

These units are not locked in place. It seems to do with the draught of the ship or the depth of the water...but from the port, there is shallow water...so how am I meant to move these ships.

As I said, I've read the manual, twice now in the past plus I use it for reference...but there is precious little in it about naval units.

Thx

The Bateux in Philadelphia are pretty useless really. The cannot move through ocean and can only
move north one region to the Princeton area before the river becomes unnavigable.

Ok...I've just read in the updated manual that a Bateaux cannot travel in sea regions.

So what are they for? Because I can't seem to move them upstream either!

They can go to Wilmington can't they?

Even if they can't they still provide a nice way to escape from an unfavourable siege of Philadelphia. But yeah, they aren't as useful as most bateaux.

Supposedly bateau can be used for recon and/or creating supply depots, but I've never done either.

In fact I am planning a little change in the upcoming BOA Gold version (see http://www.ageod.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4145) where there will be some navigable coastal waters for bateaux, and also some ways to get into princeton by the river...thus if you load troops in Phily and move them up to princeton by river, you should be able to move faster...

But the matter is still to be verified this summer...

Wonderful news on the upcoming release. The original BoA is a wonderful game, and this new release looks like it will definitely take the original gameplay to the next level. Bring on September!

I was able to create depots with 2 bateaux in 1.11, but can't in 1.12.

Guess what: 1.12a is just out! In addition to readjusted supply, maybe you can make depots again.

Get the 1.12a link under the "Supply Corrected Yet" BoA post.

I wonder about the rational of converting bateau's to supply depots.  Bateau's are not supplies

Although you can't eat them, bateaux are boats made of wood, which can be used for fuel to keep warm during the winter. So in that sense, bateaux could be considered as "supplies."

In any event, there is such a lack of supply in 1.12 it's like playing some scenario from the seige of Stalingrad, so I'm grateful for anything that keeps my armies from virtually disolving during the winter.

The patch 1.12a significantly increases supply.   Unfortunately, another bug was introduced with the patch so the patch is unuseable.   I am hoping the patch will be fixed and re-released today.

Hehe, I always thought of general supplies as food, water, clothes, etc rather than firewood.   I was imagining troops trying to eat, drink or wear bateaus... I couldn't quite do it.

I assume Bateau's are also considered to carry a small amount of provisions.

The only "provisions" on old wooden boats are rats.

this was a display bug, and it has been fixed one hour after the release of the patch (download and repatch, same link).
