Advance detection systems

UFO: Extraterrestrials is a futuristic real-time/turn-based strategy blend set on the fictional planet of Esperanza in 2025. Having made a bloody first contact with a strange form of life from another planet, the player is thrust into the tough position of leading the defense of this isolated planet against the never-ending assault of these hostile invaders

Advance detection systems

Are they really worth the extra money and space? I've been thru the game once and I'm still not sure. I had an advanced detection system at every one but in retrospect I think it was over kill.

Improved radar range I think covers regions without bases better. I get more funding from those regions with better radar coverage. I almost never get decent funds from either of the polar regions, even with bases there. I do not think I will place bases in the poles again, if the aliens take the region we will just go and take their base out. However, with better radar on my standard bases I do seem to get a little better funding from the poles.

Strange. Even with a base at the pole and intercetors shooting down all enemy craft, I do not get great funding. But radar coverage does seem to make a difference for regions I do not own.

So you think they give you increased funding for the better radar coverage eh? That's certainly a good reason to do it right there.
Has anybody else noticed a similar result?

If you can access the Developer forum have a look at the two threads I linked to below.
Galfar, one of the Devs, made a few comments regarding The types of Radar Systems and how they function.
Be aware that when he refers to "Double Detection" he means Advanced Detection System.

Detection Systems: Just 1 or more?

Base Building Questions

From my experience (at normal & higher) and what others have posted, the consensus among players seems to be that more than 4 Advanced Detection Systems in total is overkill. Of course this would depend on Base placement. Considering their Range, which is Radius according to Galfar, and the Radius of Esperanza(6378 km) it appears to be a good assessment.

Consider that one of the objectives is to provide cover for as much of the world as possible and at the highest difficulty levels you may only be able to keep 3 or 4 Bases functional at any one time, then 3 - 4 Advanced Radar do seem to make sense. I'm playing my games at this point without any mods as do the posters who seem to agree with this view.

Of course this is just my opinion your command abilities may vary [;)]

I don't seem to have any problems detecting UFO's. Earlier in the game, I would lose contact as they moved away from Ilyria, but as more bases are available I never lose them. I always see them no matter where they come in. Even when I had only a few bases I could detect them. Of course, advanced detection is the key, since a few areas of the world are kinda far for the basic detect building.

I only place one ad detect per base, but have multiple bases.

Also, I have noticed that if a UFO is lost but lands, I spot it on the ground, even in early game when it is way away from by base.

I kind of figure if they're out of range of my regular radar then they're out of range of me intercepting them anyways. If they make a base or a terror mission then I'll see in the ground troops.
