Returning Player Question

Post by KGrob »

I'm a sporadic UV player and really haven't played in some time...I'm not quite a newby but I suppose I'm far from a seasoned veteran. I've played a few of the small scenarios against the computer over the last couple years and want to start one of the long campaigns...I've never played one of those...plus, I understand the game is better now that the recent patches have gone in (2.5, etc.).

I suppose from reading the scenario briefings that number 19 looks to be the most difficult. I want a good challenge...but I don't want to get slaughtered. I'm patched and ready to go. Is scenario 19 the Campaign for me? Would something else be more appropriate.

Note: It's hard for me to play continuously because of my job and family commitments. Lately though, things seem more settled, so I'm hoping to get more playing time...maybe an average of an hour or so a day over the next month or two. I'm hoping to put a big dent in the Campaign (19 or whatever) in that time.

Thanks, let me know your thoughts.

A side note...

I've been thinking about buying WitP.  I don't normally buy games for about a year or so after they are released because of the bugs that seem to pop up in most new games nowadays.

After I get through with my long UV campaign, I'm thinking about making the leap to WitP.

How's that game looking now in terms of playability and bugs and so forth?

Playing scenario 19 with it set at the historical difficulty level with you playing the Allies will be interesting.  You can always adjust ship %s to adjust play balance.  As to WITP, it's a game on a HUGE scale and it's a lot to learn.  Turns take a long time, especially until you're used to it because the whole Pacific War is covered.  Bugs, well Matrix is still working with patching the game so you know there are some and that they're trying to do something about them.

Depends on what side you want to play. As the Allies, I would first try "Turning Tide" as it's a short "long" scenario, i.e., it's only about 4 or so months in duration, but you're able to send crippled ships back to Pearl. Most short scenarios don't allow this.

If you go this route, wait til you take the 'Canal and get its airfield up and running to at least a level 1 before tangling with the IJN carriers. I recall you start the scenario w/3 carriers at Lungaville forOp Watchtower, but soon get a fourth (the Wasp?).

"Green Hell" is also short and exciting, but the Allied carrier situation can be precarious and requires a "cat and mouse" approach when dealing w/the IJN.

So what did you decide to do?
Scenario 16 takes 6 months to play.

I just started 16 myself against Wissooner.  We've got about 3 UV games under our belts together already.

If you're worried about the time it'll take to play UV, think again about WITP.  Remember that the scope of play is large in one and huge in the other.  For me, winning against the AI with a setting of "historical" or higher indicates that it's time to move on to PBEM.  Don't blow this off as some of us play against opponents where 2 to 3 turns per week can happen.  I myself usually find myself playing 5 PBEMs at once (only 4 now) and one of them is a slow moving game that is just fine.  As long as you let a prospective opponent know that you only expect to be able to do X number of turns per ?  it'll be fine and if you do more turns than that OK too.  PBEM is so much better than playing the AI because a person with 3 choices will always pick the 4th.  Try it, you'll like it!

Hi Kgrob,

You won't need an hour to do a turn in UV PBEM. Ten minutes and you can cover and do everything in your turn. Even faster on many probably.

What Tocaff said about WitP is perfect.

If time is an issue don't even think about WitP. Save your money. If you get the game and open it up you'll find yourself staring at the board in a mesmerized [X(] state for hours before even making a move or thinking about where to begin and much less strategy.

That being said WitP is a good, solid game, if you have the time.

I'm in a WitP PBEM game now on 3 day turn cycles but it took me a month of just looking at it really and figuring out a way to make it comprehensible and approachable.

The biggest weakness of WitP to me is its lack of smaller scenarios. It just has a few I think. Matrix needs to get out like TWELVE official small scenarios in a future patch in my opinion.

But anyways, time shouldn't be a problem in UV once you get it down and that doesn't take very long.

Edit...Ahh, I haven't seen any major bugs in 2.5
