We are currently on the 11th of December. These are the airlosses so far. I am very surprised that I havent taken any more losses.

Total number of lost Zeros: 2, both to ops

Image

On the naval side, the losses so far looks like this:

Japanese losses
4 transports
5 patrol crafts or gunboats
3 destroyers
1 AV

Allied losses
2 BB
1 CA (Houston)
4 CL (Boise, Danae, Mauritius, Marblehead)
11 DD
2 AS
8 transports and tankers
1 AV
1 AO
Handful of MSW and PTs

I have a handful of DDs in very bad shape, and one of my BBs took a torpedo from a dutch sub off Balikpapan, but she managed to limp back to base. Other than that, the Australian CL from the encounter above should sink pretty soon.

I am aiming for a quick blow to take the NEI. Ive played the allies enough times to know how painful you can make that battle for the Japanese player in case he fumbles the ball. Therefore I had turn 1 landings in Ambonia, Kuching and Balikpapan. Any of these bases can work as a jump-off point to get a foothold on Java. Im counting on having boots on the ground in Java before the end of the month.

All in all Im pretty content with the developments so far with the exception of South Seas Detachment performance at Rabaul. My attack there has been repulsed twice.

The Clash of two Titans. The worst of two navies fight it out. The Kashima is tough or the Adelaide needs more target practice, and not as the target.

Im starting to notice the effects of not taking out the sub fleet in Manilla on turn 1. Loads of sub attacks all around the NEI and PI.

In other news, the US has sent a CV to Guadalcanal. We should probably expect some losses in that area. The KB is still in transit back from Pearl and is in no position to intervene. There has also been a probing attack around Tarawa that cost me a couple of transport ships.

Meanwhile, things are progressing well in Burma and the NEI. I have managed to cut off a couple of allied brigades south of Rangoon. They should die pretty soon. In the NEI I have consolidated the bases in Balikpapan, Kuching and Ambonia, and I am soon ready to take the next step in this area. We are ahead of schedule and should be able to get a foothold on Java within the next two weeks.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/16/41

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Rabaul at 61,88

Japanese Ships
PG Nikkai Maru, Shell hits 19, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
PG Seikai Maru, Shell hits 10, and is sunk
AK Tien Lee, Shell hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships
CA Australia, Shell hits 1
CA Canberra
CL Perth
DD Voyager
DD Le Triomphant

Im having some problems at Rabaul. For some reason the South Seas Detachment are failing to dig out the Aussie defenders. Now Im forced to fight a defensive battle here while I wait for the infantry to get their shit together. Seppuku time for the South Seas Detachment guys unless things shape up very fast

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Noumea at 68,113

Japanese Ships
ML Takashima, Shell hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
ML Hatsutaka

Allied Ships
CL Leander
CL Achilles

Crap. I wanted to mine Noumea to slow him down. Unfortunately he was smart enough to keep some sort of surface force present there. I was expecting it to be empty since he is probing my defences in this area in several places.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Singapore , at 23,50

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 8
Ki-21 Sally x 135
Ki-46-II Dinah x 5

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 4 damaged

Allied aircraft losses

Swordfish: 1 destroyed
Blenheim I: 1 destroyed
Blenheim IV: 2 destroyed

Allied ground losses:
81 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 13
Runway hits 50

I have been targeting Singapore airfields for a couple of days now. Ive brough it most of my Sallys to use for this purpose. I believe I will shut it down within a week.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Davao

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 9222 troops, 85 guns, 20 vehicles, Assault Value = 202

Defending force 3403 troops, 26 guns, 1 vehicles, Assault Value = 92

Japanese max assault: 188 - adjusted assault: 176

Allied max defense: 86 - adjusted defense: 27

Japanese assault odds: 6 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Davao base !!!

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
B-17C Fortress: 5 destroyed
P-40E Warhawk: 8 destroyed

Japanese ground losses:
4 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Allied ground losses:
20 casualties reported

This came as a surprise, I was not expecting to take Davao in the first go. Well, I should not complain, I am more than pleased to have this one settled already.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Mersing

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 8763 troops, 92 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 331

Defending force 5216 troops, 50 guns, 5 vehicles, Assault Value = 91

Japanese max assault: 314 - adjusted assault: 3

Allied max defense: 70 - adjusted defense: 51

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese ground losses:
429 casualties reported
Guns lost 29

Allied ground losses:
41 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

This was not as amusing though. Ive brought in a division to land beind the allies in Malaya. I was expecting to take Mersing in the first attack, after all, Ive got an entire division there now. However, that was not to happen. That means that he will probably manage to retreat with all his Malay forces into Singapore, except for a handful that I have surrounded at Georgetown. Crap.

Davao --shock attack, caught me off guard. I was planning pulling out the rest of the B-17s and P-40s in the next day. Landings are on at Kendari. Where is the KB?

Let's see if some surprises go off this turn; on the Imperial forces. Again, where is the KB? They probably are headed towards -----------------, that is what I think. A new bar is being setup in Rabaul, and Japanese are not welcome.

US Lexington finds a target to its liking. Special Base Force 28 took a beating( some of the unit are learning to become swimmers).

Force Z almost made the Kendari landings a big mess. Well next turn should be interesting. IJN CVL Ryujo is just east of Kendari by about 300 miles. Last turn 12 kates were damaged out 15 attacking Force Z. Is that the only carrier with this group?

There was some good action today-- Force Z found two small IJN surface TFs. More IJN DDs are making reefs. Also, 3rd Base Force seams to have come under the weather( some thing about supplies and attrition

First some general observations.

In the past week I have lost way too many destroyers. There are a couple of reasons for this.
1) I lost 4 in a surface engagement against Force Z. Not much to do about that, it was simply bad luck.
2) The number of sub attacks is huge, the price for not taking out Manilla on turn 1.
3) My destroyers are forced to cover alot of landings alone. Since I am in a race against time and since I must get a foothold on Java before the end of December, I have to do lots of invasions in several locations. I only have BBs to cover the two main thrusts (Malaya and Balikpapan), and therefore DDs are the major escort force for practically all landings. That means they are vunerable when they happen upon an allied CL or CA-task force, as well as to coastal artillery.

The air war is going great though. I have only lost 10 Zeros so far, ALL of them to ops. That means not one Zero lost to flak or air-to-air. I have really low airlosses all in all, a very good thing for the empire.

The allies know that I am overstretching somewhat these days. That is why he is probing me to look for weak spots. Lexington managed to catch a base force and almost wipe it out...I managed to get some survivors ashore though, but that was very close.

Force Z could have stumbled upon the Kendari invasion force. The only thing that prevented that slaughter was a handful of Kates from Ruyju. I managed to hit Prince of Wales with a long lance torpedo, and while she will not sink from it, I think that at least puts her out of the action for a couple of months. That means the allied naval defence of Java is reduced to a handful of CLs and maybe one of the crappy british BBs.

Anyway...

We are soon ready to attack Java. These are the last two bases that stood in the way of an all-out attack on Java.
The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.
In its place we are entering a period of consequences..

There are no crappy british battleships. The R class, while slow, has good armor, great experience ratings and packs a wallop with those excellent 8 15" guns. In surface combat they can be VERY dangerous. Especially if there are more than one of them. If there is just a single battleship then it usually acts as a torpedo magnet and dies before doing any serious damage but in a pair they can be a nasty surprise.
