econ 101

I've built 3 aditional bases. Now my base maintaince costs are higher than my income. Other than selling captured goods, how do I make some serious cash????

Cut back on the defenses at the other bases. Cut back on the number of interceptors, as well.
 
I usually do not have this problem early on since I do not add interceptors anywhere except at Main base until much later. Even 28+ months into the game I have only 3 int at main base and 3 standard raptor at three other bases. Their upkeep costs are high early on. The defenses can also cost a lot on the upkeep.
 
Secondary bases should only be there to hold the region. Their interceptors are used to augment the main base force, and even then I do not over use them. INT are usually only good at downing sct and ftr, and sometimes larger craft that come in close. Much later in the game, newer, better interceptors can give the larger craft problems but that is a ways down the road.

Also, if you build too many labs and workshops you will go broke, fast.
 
The faster you research the tougher the aliens become. If you research slower then the aliens will arrive in time enough. Basically, every 6 or 12 months they get a little tougher anyway. Again, if you research too fast the newer aliens will shop up and that forces you to research again and ... vicious cycle, huh?
 
Old weapons will still do damage. To be honest I do not think it is possible to get a serious advantage for any length of time over the enemy as the new enemies use the tech you need to research to fight them. Until the very end, that is, when you have all techs.
 
Again, scientists cost a whole bunch. I use 10.
