How to use SM1MRs?

Post by kholdstayr »

I was playing a scenario with ANW 3.8 and the original database that comes with it. I had some ships that had SM1s available but I couldn't get them to launch. Is there some trick? I tried firing at both aircraft and incoming missiles and nothing would work. The weapon allocation screen always said "target not illuminated". I had the radars of the ships activated, and each time I was within the 20 NM range listed in the database.

The ships wouldn't even use the SM1's to defend themselves against the incoming missiles.

What altitude were the targets in? If they were at low altitude or hidden behind a land mass, there is a chance that they are detected by either your shipboard air-search radar(s) or an external sensor, but that the fire-control radars on your ship cannot yet "see" them in order to guide missiles at them.

Also, the 20NM range is for the SM1MR missile, not the illumination radar that guides it. The effective range of the illuminator radar is not set in stone and can vary according to target altitude, target aspect (front/side/rear) and RCS, enemy jamming etc.

Nicely explained Sunburn. I'd say there's also a possible issue with the actual illumination radar's output value or the RCS of the missile. Without illumination, indicated by the "target not illuminated" message in the weapon allocation window Dale may have to take a look at the ODB for us.

Cheers

Ok, I did a little bit more testing and I couldn't illuminate surface vessels either, when they were 10 NM away and declared hostile.

Anyway, I was playing the scenario called "Escalation" in the battleset Regional Conflicts 2 and trying to fire SM1MR Block II's from a "DDG 61 Babr" ship in task force 2.

Dale, the SM-1 used as SSM were as far as i know ARM-Missiles with passive seekers!

So the missile designation in the (box) launcher should be changed to The RGM-66D SSM-ARM or Standard ARM.

It is the same weapon that has been used on some Ashville Class PGM

True Rene, unless of course it's a, "what if?". There was a proposed RGM-66F.
The RGM-66F was a projected active radar homing anti-ship missile. It was to have a monopulse doppler radar, which was briefly tested in 1973, but the RGM-66F was cancelled in 1975.

Taken from: http://www.designation-systems.net/dusrm/m-66.html

FAS had a page on it years back and I think the original ODB entry was for something like "Standard Active SSM". That page also lists a "RGM-66E" that was intended for launch from the ASROC launcher.
