3x3 or 2x2 game? CLOSED thanks for the input

Post by cverbrug »

Hello,

Is anyone playing a game with multiple people per side?
I am interesting in joining or setting up such a game

I have a lot of single player WITP experience on the JAP side. Historically I also played the WITP predecessor, Pacific War.

Any proposal?

I don't currently have WiTP installed and have been playing WPO lately. Never played WiTP or WPO as PBEM, but have played quite a few PBEMs in Sid Meier's Civilization (both III and IV). One PBEM using a "The Cold War" mod for Civ3 Conquests that I'm still playing today has gone on for about two years! I also finished a Civ3 Conquests scenario of the War in the Pacific (playing Japan) with three other humans playing China, Commonwealth, and US respectively.

Based on this, I would say that having two guys to run the allies would be an EXCELLENT undertaking (one for Commonwealth and Dutch one for US), but it would probably disadvantage the Japanese player quite a bit. The dynamics of coordinating stuff with another human player can take up a lot of email bandwith, but it is also a LOT of fun, and is a tremendous learning experience.

I suppose if you wanted to even things out with Japan not having being disadvantaged by being one brain against two, you could have two Japanese players who alternated turns back and forth or something like that. That could be a bit troublesome to start, but I think if two guys already knew each other it could work out and give the allies a real run for their money.

Now, I would love to participate in such a thing, but right now I simply don't have the opportunity. I'm traveling a lot this summer, and then I start a new tenure-track in the fall. So with two existing Civ PBEMs ongoing I can't commit to any more. But I hope my input is worthwhile [8D]

There are numerous 3 x 3 and 2 x 2 games going on (and a few asymetric games, such as 2 x1 - see Mandrake's "From Here to (it seems like) Eternity" game.)

i am currently involved in a 3 x 3 game (Threadwar) - the logistics of getting the game to move a daunting... its been about 5 months since the game started organizing, and we are now at 12/28/41... there is semi-serious talk of teaching our descendents how to play the game to carry on the battle!!! [X(]

You might want to stick to a 2x2 game if you want to have the game to progress very fast... [:D]

I'll second rtrapasso's comments about the effect of multiple players on game speed.

Apart from the handful I've played in and the 3 or 4 that I've finished (with either TOAWIII or Civilization smaller scenarios) I've also started MANY of them, probably 10, which fizzled after a month or so.

Even when there are only three humans who do not have to coordinate in any way, PBEMs can move pretty slow. If you've got devoted guys, then progress can be consistent even despite real life taking bites of days or even weeks out of progress.

But when you get 2 guys who have to coordinate as a team, or exponentially more complicated 3 guys who have to coordinate as a team . . . well, lets just stay that will require both dedication and perseverance! [:D]

I think you're wise to try for the 2 x 1, and I wish I had the time to take a crack at playing Japan against you guys *sigh* Too much impending work and not enough free time to waste on gaming.

Passing on a PBEM to your descendants [X(] ; NOW I've heared EVERYTHING!

Feinder and I have had a 2x2 PBEM game going with KBullard and Ltfighter since just after this game was released.  We are VERY slow paced...sometimes due to events beyond our control, but we always seem to eventually get the turn.  We are only in Oct 42, after almost 3 years (HOLY CRAP![X(]) of playing!

You need to find someone that is playing at your speed (and hopefully) skill level.  PBEM games were still in their infancy when we started, and so the advanced tactics available today just did not exist.  We all made many mistakes (including my loss of 3 USN CVs in an ambush that did not work out) but it has balanced out pretty well so far.

My recommendation is to take on someone who has no prior experience with PBEM if you have none.  Give it a month of playing, and then restart the game.  This will give you a chance to work some of those initial kinks out...but if you really want flavor, forgoe the restart and just plow on ahead.
