My big beef

Post by Richrd »

When I click on a unit on the map it comes up identified as Battalion HQ, Rifle Platoon, Pak 38, etc. But I knew that just by looking at the counters, in most cases. What I want to know is which battalion HQ or which rifle platoon. Such as III/646. Am I missing something? Does anybody else want that too? Is it possible to do or implement?

Hi guys,

The f1-f5 keys access all your game info; in this case, select the unit in question and use f2 to bring up the "Unit Handbook" which will provide all kinds of info on that particular unit, including chain of command (located center-top, right of the terrain movement costs). That should solve your problem!

P.S. the "Highlight Org" function on the bottom of the screen, or accessed under the "Display" drop-down menu (Highlight > Organization), provides a graphical display of org info, if not quite so precise....

One thing that needs fixing is the winter grahics set for the new halftacks. 251/10 251/17 etc show up in winter battles wearing summer camo.

I agree with Richrd - I find it very clumsy to have to press F2 note the unit and keep a separate record for who is with who.

I've only played at the battalion level and it must be a nightmare at a higher level and its impossible when all your troops are in trucks for a few turns. It doesn't seem hard to implement which makes it even more frustrating.

One reason I bought this game was because I, incorrectly assumed all these small things would have been ironed out with an old established game.

I agree and it used to be worse with the Talonsoft games because it would access the CD everytime you hit F2. Now at least the info comes up quicker because everything is on the HD.

I don't find in that hard using a combination of the highlight function and the F2 key to keep track of who's who.

This is all up to the scenario designer. In my master smolensk oob I am creating (which covers Army Group Center and the various Soviet Fronts for july 41) I have taken the time to define the units as you have described above. You can view the complete organization using F2 in detail. I don't believe there is a way to do it so it shows in the unit display.

For the leaders, you can have the square counter display on the upper right of the screen reflect whatever you want in the caption.  For example, if the computer generates "Smith" for a leader, you can change the counter to read "Lt. Jones," and that is what the counter display will reflect without having to hit the F2 button.

I haven't been able to do that with the non-leader units.  For example, a rifle platoon will always say "Rifle Platoon."  I can give it a more specific designation in the OOB editor, but my changes will show up only on the F2 screen.  Is there a way to change the "Rifle Platoon" caption to something else?

Between the Highlight Org button and the F2 screen, I haven't had any complaints.  For gameplay, the Highlight Org button is the one you want.  However, if I could change the "Rifle Platoon" to read as something else on the counter, that'd be a nice touch.
