Long Campaign Maps

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Long Campaign Maps

Post by KG Erwin »

Let me preface this by stating that I wrote graphics guru Tracer about this. My beef is this: there are NO paved roads with lane markers that belong on Pacific theater maps. I saw these on a couple of randomly-generated maps involving the USMC, and it ruined it for me. Dirt tracks & jungle trails, fine, but concrete roads, or even railroad tracks, don't belong on Guadalcanal or New Guinea or ANYWHERE in the locales my Marines fight in.

This has bugged me since the newer terrain shps were incorporated -- the European-style roads look like what I drive on now. Thank god they didn't throw in a few 4-lane autobahns. [:D]

Option #1:
Since trails don't work as advertised (the movement rates on trails during play do not match the movement costs on the Terrain Effects Chart (the 'I' Key during play)), then I recommend using the Editor and changing Primary Roads to either Secondary Roads or else simply 'Mixed' (clear) terrain.

Option #2:
Reload the battle until there are no Primary Roads on your battlefield.

The problem is with the map generator, not the graphics. The game doesn't try to build maps accurate to the battle location, other than using the right basic terrain. Another reason to play user-generated campaigns.

Manually edit the maps? Ugh. So, actually, what's needed is a map generator that disables use of primary (paved) roads & railroads. In other words, a Pacific-specific program.

Michael, where are you when you're needed? [:(]

You forgot option #2:  just keep reloading your battle until you get a suitable map.

And FlashFyre mentioned option #3:  don't play WW2 Long Campaigns or Generated Campaigns.  Just play custom designed campaigns (like Long Long Road).  I personally think that this is the best option.  WW2 Long Campaigns and Generated Campaigns are way too easy to win, anyway.  In fact, WW2 Long Campaigns and Generated Campaigns are so easy to win that they should only be used as training aids for beginners and novices.

Alright, then, what options are there for a Pacific War fan? Not many. That's why I opt for the long campaign, by default. Victor, your last statement almost came off as an insult, but I don't think you meant it that way.

Build your own. You've got enough resources and knowledge to put together a reasonably-sized (not a Das Reich, of course) campaign. You'll be able to put the Japanese where they SHOULD be, not where the stoopid AI puts them, and use Japanese units that the AI never buys (because the picklists are messed up).

Glenn,

Once a human figures out how the computer moves its units, then WW2 Long Campaigns and Generated Campaigns become so predictable that anybody can win all the time.  It's so easy that it's boring.

I didn't intend to insult anybody, but I stand by what I said about WW2 Long Campaigns and Generated Campaigns being too easy to challenge the abilities of any decent SPWAW player.

If reloading your battles to get a suitable map is unacceptable to you, then FlashFyre's suggestion might be your best option.

Ok, understood. In the back of my mind is a mini-campaign for DVRN that features the "Old Breed". Guadalcanal, New Britain, Peleliu & Okinawa. Much of the map work has already been done in pre-existing individual scenarios. Hmm...
