AV seaplane ships

Post by blastpop »

The AV Tangier in the Coral Sea scenario- how do you launch the search planes from it? I stop the TG and set search zones, yet no planes fly- can't find anything in the rule book about it either- can someone help?

Thanks!

As I recall there were two types of seaplane ships. One type was able to launch at sea the other had to be anchored to service aircraft. Not sure how this game treats that or if your specific type requires that.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

I guess the question is how do I anchor to allow the AV to operate?

I found this in the manual:

To Anchor Point – clicking on this will bring up another menu listing all possible Anchor Points. Left click to select an Anchor Point. Although any TG can use an Anchor Point, their practical purpose is to allow seaplane tenders to anchor and then launch search planes. Anchor Points you can use are shown in white.

The enemy may be able to use some or all of your anchor points.

OK, what do you need to do to allow the anchor point option to appear?

OK, what do you need to do to allow the anchor point option to appear?

You have to be playing a scenario with anchor points your side can use.

An AV seaplane tender requires an anchorage to launch planes. An anchorage can either be a friendly port or an anchor point useable by your side in the scenario. Anchor points are set as useable by one or both sides by the scenario designer.

For example, in Coral Sea as the US, there are no anchor points useable by the US, so it doesn't show as an option on the US TG onmap menu selections. The Japanese in this scenario do have useable anchor points which can be selected as TG destinations on their TG onmap menu.

Non-AV types ships, such as many Japanese capital ships and, of course, carriers, do not need an anchorage to launch planes.

As has been mentioned, you need to have your AV's anchored for them to throw up searchplanes. This can either be done at an Anchor point, or a port. The little port symbol on the search rose for av taskgroups should let you know this (if you have only av's in the taskgroup). It's not enough to move into the same hex as the port/anchor point, you must select the option to anchor, or move into port. This can be given either through the on-map orders window, or by selecting the correct taskgroup and right-clicking the anchor point/port and selecting the correct option.

Just for reference, the seaplane tenders (AV's) didn't have a flight deck or catapult facilities.  They had a hanger but used a crane to lower the planes to the water for take off and recovery.  That's why they have to be at anchor to launch and recover thier planes.

Thanks for the info! This was not clear from my reading of the rules manual.

Just as an aside, I have a fair number of books devoted to WWII naval operations, including a complete Samuel Eliot Morrison History of United States Naval Operations in World War II, but it's hard to beat the convenience of Wikipedia for quickly checking some date or fact that otherwise escapes your memory.

This doesn't seem right to me. I would think that there should be harbors on New Caledonia or Espitiru Santo that she should be able to use.

No you cant use enemy points. The anchor points represent small naturally protected areas that a particular side happened to know about. Remember that seaplanes can be launched from ports as well as anchor points.

"Remember that seaplanes can be launched from ports as well as anchor points."

Alex, that was the line that I hadn't paid attention to in your earlier post. My mistake...

I am actually a CAW veteran... it having been the first computer game that I purchased. I have all four of the earlier versions (CAW, CAW II, Expansion Kit, and CCAW) as well as having been a Run 5 subscriber long ago. It has just been so long since I've played CAW that I have forgotten a lot of the details... My game has been ordered (physical shipment - I'm on dialup so no digital DL), and I am anxiously awaiting its arrival...
fair winds,
