Pearl Fiasco?

Post by Toby42 »

I have played and replayed the Pearl Harbor scenario numerous times. I've played both sides and never have the Japanese sunk a Battleship. A Cruiser or a Destroyer maybe!!! What gives ????

Luck of the draw, I think. I've had widely varying results, with between one and five battleships sunk.

I realize that Pearl is strictly a "Training" scenario. Are the Japanese planes dumbed down for this??? I just ran it again. Same results, NO Sinkings !!! I've probably ran it 10 times from both sides. Same results. The only plus for the Japanese is that they get to bombard Midway.....

I've run it from both sides, and both varients. As the US player, I found the Japanese launched a single, minimal, strike and didn't do much. As the Japanese player, I was able to sortie all my planes twice, and sink nearly all the US BBs in either scenario.

I, too, was able to run two strikes, and sank seven battleships and several destroyers.

Well, I must have a bunch of reject pilots. I just ran it again and same results, only worse. Nothing sunk and just a few damaged!!!

Hard to believe, those ships are just sitting there like practice targets.

I played once and sunk 5 BB's a couple of cruisers and some DD's. Seemed reasonable to me. I'll run some tonight to see if my result was an aberation...

make sure you are targeting the ships, not the port.

I believe the game is set up so that extended range strikes only pack 1/3 of the punch of normal range strikes. Therefore, as the Japanese at Pearl, make sure you get your carriers down close enough to Pearl to get in a normal range strike - it will also take less time allowing you to get in a second strike.

I think this is an important consideration for the USA in other scenarios - you need to be in fairly close for your Dauntlesses to deliver a 1200lb payload instead of a 400lb payload. In other words, not all hits do the same amount of damage.

It could be you are attacking outside of the "green" range circle, but within the red (if I remember my colors). In short, if you are not close enough when you launch the attach you planes don't go fully armed and/or some don't go at all I would imagine.

I would assume that when the AI plays the Japanese that they would attack at the best range???

I ran the Pearl Scenario again. I played as the US. This time I sortied the Pacific Fleet out of Pearl and I moved the Carriers North. A monstrous battle developed in the open sea. This time the Japanese sank many ships and acheived a Decisive Victory!!! US Carriers got some strikes in and damaged several Japanese ships without getting hit in return. Go figure. Lot's of fun though...

I just tried the Pearl scenario for the first time and played as the Japanese, sank all eight BBs, two cruisers and a bunch of destroyers. Of course I hung around and ended up launching three full strikes, but after the first two I had sunk 6 BBs and damaged the other two. Seems reasonable to me.
Quality has a quantity all of its own.

Just played it 'Final Countdown' style thanks to Unhappy and the Japanese still managed to sink two BBs! No carriers to go back to, though... [:D]

I played twice the Pearl Harbour and twice I got my butt kicked by the Japanese Navy...I lost a lot of Battleships,CAs and destroyers.

It's a lot of fun though...different to War in the Pacific..I like them both
