Getting Addicted to Winning

Post by KG Erwin »

This is a corollary to my "minors" thread. Having started a manage-every-game association, and winning the World Series in my first year, something strange is happening. I've become obssessed with winning every game. Now, I know it's impossible to do so over 154 games, but accepting a loss is becoming more and more difficult as my second full season is progressing. Is this how Yankees' fans of the 1940s and 1950s felt?

Am I weird in thinking this way? To put it differently, is the "victory disease", which I've read about in military history, a real thing? I'm beginning to wonder.

again I'm like you.. when I manage every game I'm very addicted to winning.. I get very frustrated if my relief pitcher gives up runs late in the game and causes us to lose the game.  Sometimes I get so frustrated I have to quit playing for the rest of the night before I throw my keyboard.  I know I know.. it's only a game but man sometimes I feel like I'm the real manager there in the dugout and I'm pissed at my teams performance and I should be tossing coolers of gatorade around in the locker room yelling at them.

God I love this game :P

I kinda have that feeling - until I get stomped 11-0 or some similar score. Then I get the "it is only a game" feeling.

You are not weird at all. The same thing has happened with me. I get into the same mindset.

The worst is when I lose to a club I know is inferior by a blow out. Suddenly I feel the need to shake the things up and really there is no need.

I get that, too. I start fiddling with the batting order or even make some player moves (a trade to solidify the lineup, maybe). It's a natural reaction, I suppose, as the quest for unattainable perfection continues.

But, yes, you are right. Slumps happen -- that's a fact of baseball life. I keep analyzing my team, and realize that barring any catastrophic injuries, my guys will probably come out on top at the end of the campaign.

There again, my background as a wargamer keeps surfacing, which is why I try to keep a reserve (the bench players) to fill in when necessary, and try to minimize casualties (injuries).

(Note: the AI tends to keep fatigued players in the lineup too long, which contributes to their DLs. Even with my tendency to rest tired players, the injuries still happen, but not so frequently.)

Yeah, even though I know it doesn't really make a difference I treat my guys like they were real. If a 3B makes an error that costs the game I may sit him down the next game so he can get his head together and concentrate on his fielding - or some such thing like that.

I must say i agree this is the first baseball game that i own for either PS2 PSP or for the PC where i really feel like im a real manager making tough calls based on what i think is best. I wont say im addicted to winning because i realize that i will lose games, but take for example i have a pitcher in my association on my team that, after 2 starts has a total of 9 walks and i dont know what im going to do with him. so im really having to consider all the possible options and decide whats best for the team early on,i feel like a real manager.
