U.S. Naval Aviation in the Pacific is a 70-page pdf file you can find online. Issued by the Navy in 1947, it gives a very general overview of the war in the Pacific, but offers some neat tidbits:

Development of US night fighters ...modified Hellcats in 1943, which could intercept Japanese planes at distances up to 80 miles. Record was 163 kills to 3 losses.

The limitations in developing forward land bases, as the Japanese could re-org and adapt by the time those advanced strips were cleared and running.

How the Catalina was abandoned in favor of better recon planes.

The number of sorties flown by naval fighters, torpedo planes and bombers -- the tonnage they sunk and the fact that only 2% of the sorties flown by US fighters actually resulted in aerial combat.

How even in 1942, the Japanese lost 20-40% of any planes that engaged US aircraft.

Interesting read, even if it doesn't give you any tips on playing the game.
