Killing Robots

Post by siRkid »

Here is my strategy for killing Robots.

First I keep my team together when I know Robots are around so I can concentrate their fire power. If I spot one during my turn, I assume it has enough points to react if I fire at it, so I use a trooper that is at its back or side to fire the first shot. If it turns, I select another trooper to fire that is now on the Robot’s side or rear making it turn a second time. I try to keep this up burning up its movement point. When I think I’ve done enough damage and burned up its points, I charge it and fire on auto from one square away. I also try and throw grenades if I can so it will not react. If I don’t have enough firepower to take it out, I’ll fire one shot and then run for cover. Hopefully it will advance on me next turn using up all its movement points and then I can rush it. One thing for sure you’ll need at least Plasma weapons to take them down without losing a lot of guys.

many of the different types are suseptable to the acid grenades. The chemogun is also great but you've got to be close with that. Flamethrowers are okay but once again you need to get close.

Robots mechies die from chemo-gun? I have not tried that ...

My problem is running into them at range, say on a Terror mission where they can group up (6 at time, with more coming) and they are out of mt sight range. Sure, 1 recon trooper helps, but then dies.

I have beaten them, many many times, but OUCH. Still, this is a fun challenge, and I would not want it any other way.

I usually use everything, and early on fire rockets work wonders.

Chem guns and Flame guns work well vs Mechs, only thing is you got to be close and the Mech has to be the center of the target, not part of the spead

of course, the trick is to get close to them !

one thing I think is wrong with the game, is why the Rocket launcher never improves, you get early HE, a Chem round, a Flame round and a stun round ? why not a Plasma warhead, advanced Gas shells, Static Warheads, tracking warheads and so on ???

Yes, I hate the sight range dis-advantage. there is no way that anyone can convince me that in the future, we'll actually have worse sight equipment than today. The first thing I did was to mod the sight range so human and alien are even. It also helps to save a lot of AP so your troops will take multiple shots as the alien moves around.

Use fire rockets and flamethrowers

Failing that, hit them again and again and again ... concentrating on one at a time with semi-shots (3 shots). Stay grouped unless there are area-floater gas aliens out there.

Think about all the XP you get with each hit!

You know, I'm NOT sure, but...these things may be weaker from the rear.

Now I could be just imagining this but...I've seen several cases where robots went down uncharacteristically quick..one plasma hit to the rear facing of a Destroyer, for instance...and others where 6 ion hits to the front didn't even ding it's paint job.

And I can recall one battle long ago when my wimpy basic tank cannon dropped one in one shot...into it's ugly hindquarters.

Does target facing matter in this game, I wonder?  Are aliens (and perhaps humans?) weaker defensively from the side/rear?

I'm not sure facing matters. Sometimes one shot will kill anything from any angle.

I notice that my soldiers get hit harder in the back, as well. And the aliens do seem to be a tad weaker in the back. Or maybe it was just luck the few times back shots happen ...

Sometimes I think the aliens are less likely to shoot my guys in the back. They'll do it alright but there are times..........I guess they don't perceive them as a threat perhaps and so have other priorities.
I've just started using the fire rockets. This is my third go round but I've never used them before. I haven't reached the mechs yet having just researched plasma but they do real well on the organic aliens.
This game I'm doing a lot of experimenting around seeing how well things and tactics work that I haven't tried before. It's a blast.[;)]

If you are so far into the game without plasma weapons then you are really doing a good job with less. You need to interrogate Commanders which will open up the plasma tech tree, and since you are well into the game, you should have had an opportunity to stun a commander or two by now. So my first suggestion is to make certain you recognize the green VIPON commanders, stun them, and then research them. Also make certain that you have built an interrogation room, otherwise they die. Getting plasma tech opened and manufacturing plasma weapons and grenades will help defeat the robots.

in my game, I never got Plasma until mid 2109, lazer and rifles for a long time :)

Chemguns and Flamethrowers were my basic killers

(got to make sure the bad guys don't have reaction fire left over !!!!)

plus 3 rocket lauchers

(I just wasn't getting Vipon missions)

I've played the game trough on easy and am in March on Hard { vanilla in both games }have had to shoot some aliens 5 to 8 times, often more, and then the next one will go down after 2 shots.Seems to be no rhyme or reason as to how many shots it will take to kill'em.Very frustrating at times as i like to send out 1 and 2 man teams and it gets them killed.

If you are'nt getting any vipon missions try saving just before u send the ship out and then reload the game to get a different set of aliens.I've tried it a few times because i had the same problem.Seem to get random choices now and then.

I was wondering, if you read the description of the robots, it mentions the fact that the head is the most vulnerable. Now I notice that when you target an alien, you actually have a few "hot spots" which you can select. Is it possible that there is a difference in the vulnerability of these spots (such as a head shot) or are they all the same?

Yo jp

Acutually i've noticed that if u target them of center and or from the side they seem to drop easier.Same with the Hallucinoiods--------but then again some times it just doesn't seem to matter where u hit them it just takes a lot of shots, even as u progress thru the differrent weapons. One will drop easy and the next one will take several or more shots to drop em.---

I've found this to be consistant all the way through the game and with any type of alien that can be targeted in more than one spot. Now is a bug or perhaps it has to do with which one of your people is shooting the D#@7 things. So maybe it depends on your hitting power or whatever.
