Any Opinions?

Post by GROND »

I was wondering if it would be worth some of us posting the ways that we have come up with to accelerate the advancement of new experience based teams. I know that personally when I first started playing ToS that "other" experience points took me forever to accumulate and I suspect for a large number of the people who read this forum and don't post that it might be useful information to have.

I never had any problems with getting experience.

My supporttitans (the ones behind the lines with the GMs) had problems generating combat and movement experience, but that's it.

I use linking extensively - there's nothing like having a lock on a titan the second it comes into sight, and my close combat titans dodge enough as it is. I never understood people playing for experience. :) It seems to accumulate naturally enough...

The experience system in the freeware of Titans of Steel does have some minor problems but these can be bypassed. Usually, players end up with a LOT of movement development points. I think the main problem is that players don't utilize most of their skills. This can be from negligence or even from lack of the correct equipment installed on their Titans. Designing Titans specific for your pilots skill in the factory can help with this. I highly recommend it. Its also fun too.

Here are some TIPS:
1) Walking into water hexes and or dodging give good mxp.
2) Scan constantly if possible. This adds some extra Oxp.
3) I'd also mention using your weapons but this goes without saying.

The more you scan the more 'other' experiences you'll get. ALso don't neglect to increase certain stats when possible as it makes leveling up easier. Killing enemy jocks also helps in this area. Called shots to the head are good. In my experience, Missile Titans score many more kills than other titans. I usually start with a good short Range Titan and then when finances allow it, I add a missile titan for backup. Success becomes much more easy and the battles start become a bit more routine rather than epic struggles for survival. Adding a 3rd Titan increases the Odds just enough that the battles become a lot tougher but rewards are better as well and on and on it goes.

a great method of gaining OXP is increase the recon skill. once this is done so it's up a fair bit, start running around in brush/forests.

IMO however, people with business should have a chance of earning a few extra OXP after battles (haggling over payment) and when purchasing/selling titans (haggling over price).

For OXPs, an excellent way is to have a DCS and good damage control skill. Usually 100~150 OXPs per successful repair. Extra advantage is you don't have to pay for the repairs you make during battle later on in the factory, saving you loads of money.
Having a good medical skill and setting both modes to wait will heal your jock faster, giving him some more OXPs. He must be wounded first, though :)
For MXPs you can also jump up in dense woods (pulling jump stunts), provided you have a good jump skill. And, of course, DfA.

You will also want to make sure that you increase your 'other skills'. The easiest and most noticeably useful skills are Scanning and Damage control but the others are equally good. Even so you'll have to wait for TOS:Warring Suns for a much more balanced experience system.

Another way to get real easy OXPs is launching your flares. You'll get ~40XPs (like most other average skill check) for each launch, with 7 charges you have a potential of almost 300 OXPs.

As always, Thorgrim has excellent advice. A good general rule is the more you use your skills, the more xp's you'll get.
