Other UK Capital?

Commander – Europe at War Gold is the first in a series of high level turn based strategy games. The first game spans WW2, allowing players to control the axis or allied forces through the entire war in the European Theatre.

Other UK Capital?

It says in the manual that the UK has two capitals. What's the other one besides London? Germany needs to know so we can capture it!

Funnily enough it must have something that's different...because I honestly never had any inclination to buy SC2.

In fact I am a Fileplanet subscriber and get "hitpoints" for being a member. For a time, SC2 was on offer there, at NO charge to me, and I still didn't have the inclination to pick it up - and this from what I regard as a valued developer and publisher (Battlefront)....and yet I could not wait to pick this up....

So it clearly has something that SC2 didn't. Of course I don't know what that is, seeing as I never played SC2. [;)]

I never played SC2 either. But I played the original SC quite a bit. The screen shots and game scale of this new game remind me of SC. (More like a full on psychotic flashback.....)

In terms of gameplay SC2 took a step forward, in terms of graphics it took a huge step backwards. The game looks terrible. SC was a better all round package IMO as it looked great and played well.

Being a wargamer you cant really afford to be a graphics whore but sometimes it can make the difference. I wont purchase The Campaign Series because i can no longer play in 2D view without wanting more even though i know the tried and tested engine under the hood is one of the best out there. It could do with an upgrade.

Commander looks great and also has the features and level of complexity that appeal to a wide range of gamers. Its bound to be a huge success. People have been waiting for a PG upgrade for years and finally we have it...

You know what, I have no idea. I pity the developer that tries to -please me...I have so many different things I like...
  • Strategic games
  • Tactical games
  • Complex games
  • Simple games
I think from that the ideal game would be a strategic game that goes down to tactical level which is complex but has a simple interface...lol..not asking alot.

Seriously though...this game does come quite close to what I like...the only key thing missing is the tactical edge.

Forge of Freedom has it. A great strategic level game with a reasonable tactical game...the interface lets it down. It's a fantastic game and I'm having a blast still playing it, but it is still let down with the interface.

HoI2 DD has the strategic game and an abstract tactical level with the many provinces but has a difficult interface
FoF has both strategic and tactical...but the interface is a little difficult
C:EaW has strategic but a great interface
Close Combat has a fantastic tactical level, but no strategic level

That's about it.

I think probably a key feature is a complex game with a simplistic interface. Strategic, tactical or, preferably, both.

hmmm..just don't see that...Panzer General maybe if you want to say they both borrowed from that then that's fine, but this looks and feels closer to PZ then SC to me. I mean, it's a grand strategy game set in europe..how different can you be? Of course there is going to be things that are alike.

Bah, Edinburgh is closer [8D]

But I do believe that if all was lost the plan was to fight on from Canada.

As a matter of fact, I did. I remember thinking it was pretty good stuff, back in the day. Lack of multi-player and poor AI cut down its re-playability after awhile. (I also played CoS contemporary "High Command" which was a complete waste of digital space). So, yes, I love this genre of games: turn-based, strategic, theater scale. Played SC (one) for awhile, including some PBEM. Played Panzer General and even Allied General. And of course the ultimate, WITP!

People here are saying the game is closer to PG than SC. I have no reason to doubt them. I interpret that to mean that the game is more abstract then SC (which is saying alot), but probably has a much better rock-paper-scissors combined arms feel to it (like PG).

Bottom line: I'll probably buy UFO, pass on CAW, and the new "Commander" is on the bubble.
