Totally Insane(?) Suggestion

Post by Anthropoid »

I had an idea occur to me that I want to express, just in case one of you modders gets an idea from it.

The detail in this engine is amazing. None of the other war game engines I've seen handle naval and air combat as well as this one. What a shame that it is applied only to early 20th century historical scenarios, and a few moderately "what if" scenarios.

There must have been interesting political situations between 1945 and today where naval / air warfare would have been major issues? I suppose in Korea & Vietnam, there was not a lot of contest, but the Falklands War comes to mind. Other than that I cannot think of many other wars or battles, with the exception of the cat-n-mouse games between Soviet and Yankee subs in the Cold War.

However, an imaginative scenario builder need not be limited by what actually happened. What actually happened COULD provide a basis (with a liberal dose of artistic license) to dream up an interesting hypothetical scenario.

The most interesting I think would involve Soviet vs. Western forces, and there must have been half-dozen or more major tension events during the 20th century (or dreamable in the present or future) where a Russia vs. West naval war could be imagined.

I personally would love to see such a scenario, in which radar, long-distance missiles, high-tech reconnaissance, missile defense systems, high-tech subs, super CVs, etc. was included. As an example of a very interesting land war analogy: in TOAW III there is a scenario called "Tension 1979" which is a hypothetical USSR vs. NATO war in Western Europe, including the capacity for tactical nukes. You could just use this scenario as a starting point, contract the European theater into a much more abstracted level, but expand the naval and air parts so that most of the planet could be included?
The x-ray is her siren song. My ship cannot resist her long. Nearer to my deadly goal. Until the black hole. Gains control...

CobraAus and El Cid were talking about that on the WITP forum - modern China vs US. I don't know if they still plan to do it.

For myself, if I ever finish my current War in the West mod, I want to try the Napoleonic Wars.

I have a China war game (mechanical) - it is called Strait Crossing - and it uses substantially the same map area if the US, Australia, Japan, China, Taiwan, the Philippines and possibly other nations get involved.

Harpoon has no land combat system and is far too detailed for a large-scale game in any case. But I use it to figure out the values for things in larger scale games.
