L'il Orphan A/C ;-)

Post by Prince of Eckmühl »

Has anyone who's had strike a/c redirected because their base is gone actually seen the refugees in use at another base or ship?

No, as the distance to the next base/ship was longer than the max distance allowed, when I encountered loosing carriers. It made me wonder tho, as other strike aircrafts made it back to their carrier within the red circle (isn't that the max strike distance, while green would be the safe zone regarding fuel consumption?) each time. The "red" distance was way longer than the distance (to the next land base) some plane squadrons had to cover after they lost their carrier, on 2 occasions, they just ditched.
I think that's odd.

Check out Section 15 on page 26 of the manual. The green circle is the max range that all strike planes can reach, the red is the max range that at least one plane type can reach. Planes have to return to their base (or where it sunk) before they start looking for an alternative base. They should find any alternative base within 6 hexes of their original.

Yes, i only read manuals more thoroughly if I encounter problems or if the game mechanics remain a mystery to me. So, pls bear with me.

But, let me explain my experience.... ( i don't have screenshots or exact numbers though)...

On 2 occasions, it was like (most) planes from carrier A made it back to their home waters although the target was right next to the red (outer) circle. Planes from carrier B ditched after they returned from a target near the green circle, although the distance they had to cover was way smaller. The next land-base was like 8 or 10 hexes away from the original carrier location.

I think it's odd if the (majority of) planes from carrier A would be able to make it back home, while planes from carrier B would all ditch 2 or 4 hexes away from the next landbase. The rules should be adjusted, means that they should take into account fuel consumption, mileage, and damage level (if not already present). I don't think that counting hexes (after the home-base carrier was sunk) is realistic/sufficient, especially if keeping in mind the discrepancies regarding mileage, as described above.
