Nothing new under the Sun?

Commander – Europe at War Gold is the first in a series of high level turn based strategy games. The first game spans WW2, allowing players to control the axis or allied forces through the entire war in the European Theatre.

Nothing new under the Sun?

Post by decaro »

After looking at some hex-based screen shots, E@W looks like a cross between Panzer General (on steriods) that plays like a (turn-based) HoI. Not that this is bad, but been there, done that.

Or am I all wrong re this latest new game?

No...I think you hit the nail on the head.

But it's damned good fun. I love HoI2 - but I need an hour or so to get into the "grand strategy" frame of mind in HoI, pick up where I left off etc, etc...

Panzer General...what can I say...my intro to wargaming and always a pleasure to play.

So it's no bad thing here.

I bought almost all the versions of HoI, including Doomsday, which at least gives you an accurate European map if the Allies win! But then you have to play another decade vs. the USSR, even if you don't want to.

(Making History is a turn-based HoI, but not as much fun.)

I bought the first two PGs, but couldn't find Pacific General; then SSI went to a high-graphics format, and I lost interest.

So, CAW is re-released (I bought that too), and now E@W; so what else is being remade and then resold at top dollar? Sounds like someone needs to make a new wargaming engine, otherwise it's variations on a theme for the remainder of the season.

It sounds like this game is lacking in a few areas right now, so I'm ambivalent about shelling out $60 for it.  HOI2 has a sound system but I'm itching for some good old-fashioned hex-based play.  Or maybe I'm feeling nostalgic for Panzer General and the sleeplessness it caused way back then.  [:D]
