Confused about databases

Post by Banquet »

Hi all,

I had H3 a few years ago and enjoyed it.. just now I've decided to buy ANW and am looking forward to playing again.

A question though, if anyone would help. I've browsed this forum but am still unclear on a few things;

What database does the game come with? I've heard of the playerDB, and DB2000, plus various other DB's. Should I be downloading one of these to play? Are they superior to the DB (assuming there is one) that comes with the download?

What I would like is the most up-to-date, accurate database of post war units. I guess that maybe subjective.. but if anyone could point me in the right direction I would be grateful. Also, I assume scenerio's are designed to work with one database or the other. Would I be limiting me choice of scenerio's with one particular database? Is one the best supported?

Also, I see that the download is still 3.7. Should I update to 3.8 or will this mean most scenerio's are no longer compatible?

thanks

Howdy,

There are two databases included with H3 ANW. Work was put into ANW DB to be accurate and compliant with all changes in 3.7 and 3.8. The Original or Standard DB is also 3.8 compliant but had its focused moved away from accuracy to be more playable for the beginning Harpooner.

3.8 had some additional changes but you should definitely upgrade. Third-party DB and scenario editors have been good at labeling which versions there work is compliant with.

Thanks Russell - seems like it might be best to stick with the included DB's for the time being.

Actually, having now upgraded to 3.8 I see there are 3 databases.. ANW 1.4, 2.0 and standard. Presumably ANW 2.0 is the one to use if I want the more accurate DB?

Edit: hmm, says in the notes they are for multiplayer?

You nailed it on the subjective part. I think PlayersDB and DB2000 get the most attention in terms of updates and improvements. HUD3 is a holy grail many of us are anxiously looking forward to but that isn't available to us yet. ANWDB is compliant with 3.8 and continues to improve but I don't personally rank it up there with PDB and DB2k yet, but its focus and smaller size allow Dale to keep more of the platforms up to date. So lots of variables, different approaches, etc...

The nice thing, they are all freely available and tons of scenarios, so trying them all out is pretty easy.

The amount of databases, scenerio's and options available to H3 players is a good thing indeed, although a little confusing for a new player. (Well, for me at least)

I've checked harpoon hq and the DB2000 doesn't seem to be compatible with 3.8 yet, although some scenario's are? That seems confusing to me. I guess you use the 3.6 database for the time being? Edit - just seen an earlier thread that states the scenario's for each DB load up. That's neat :)

As you say, they are all free which is great and the way H3 seems to manage DB's now appears to make it easy to swap back and forth. Although I imagine you'd have to remember which scenario's worked with which database?

Anyway, I've a lot to learn about the game before I need to worry too much about all that :)
