I would like to know more about how the game engine conducts searches. How reliable are the sightings likely to be & is the reliability a random process or is there any logic to them? How does reliability improve over time? Is reliability a function of aircrew quality? Once a force is sighted is it prosecuted by conducting focused following by search planes? Are force locations reported back also subject to random variation or is there any logic to their locations? I notice they jump as they are updated & I assumed this was related to imprived reliability with updating? Etc. I think you catch my drift.

Still a fantastic gaming experience! Lost both the Lexington & Yorktown this time around in the Coral Sea. The Lex was a victim of carrier-based strikes but the Yorktown fell to ground-based level bomber strikes. I am working my way through the scenarios playing both sides & having a lot of fun.

As an aside, I was privelaged to be taught in my training by someone who was on the Lexington when it went down in the Coral Sea. He was a Pharmacists Mate at the time (he would be called a Hospital Corpsman now). Too bad I wasn't aware enough at the time of the history of the battle to grill him more on his experience.

Reliability of sightings is controlled by the search rating of the squadron. The range is No Recon Training, Poor, Average, Good, Excellent, Fantasy (the last for radar equipped modern aircraft). The first sighting report is the most unreliable, it trends towards more accurate over the next 2 or 3 sightings, after that there is no improvement. Both location and composition of a sighting are subject to variability.
