CTD when trying to load a saved game

Post by wbm4x »

Hello.

I apologize if this problem has been addressed in the past. I tried a search, but not a single search term returned a result (a problem with Matrix's search routine?).

From the main window, the program crashes to the desktop when I click on the "Load a Saved Game" button. I'm in mid-January 1942 of a scenario 15 as the Japanese vs the AI--enough time invested to be annoyed. [:@]

I tried restarting the program, rebooting the machine and restarting, and finally reinstalling the program. Problem still persists.

Thought the previous saved game might be a problem, so I deleted it (and the autosave). Still no luck.

Started a new game (which worked, thankfully), saved a turn and tried to load the saved game. Problem exists here, as well. [:@][:@]

So, basically, I can never play WitP again, unless I want to play without saving. [:(]

Version is 1.806

My specs:

Windows XP (SP2)
Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
2 GB RAM
nVidia GeForce 5200 w/ 128 MB RAM

My system is about 3 1/2 years old, but I've never had a problem with WitP in two years of gameplay.

Please help!

I know this sounds kind of easy, but I have to ask as this has been the source of most of my problems like this: Have you installed or changed anything??? Think hard, Internet updates, Windows update from the MS site, a driver of some sort, anything?

Also, have you saved previously with the updated 1.806 version patch? Or was this failed save the first time since the patch?

No, nothing new installed in quite a while. The last Windows Update, IIRC, was a couple of weeks ago, when the June security update was released.

I save the game every game day--I have over 40 saves in my SAVE folder. And perhaps six or seven saves are from the current session, which had been running for about two days since the last time the program had been restarted. All the saves are with the updated 1.806 patch.

Shoot, well, that blows that idea. Maybe somebody that has played WitP a lot longer than me will have an idea that's related to the game itself and not your PC. You sound like you have played WitP a lot more than me. I am still learning this immense game, and I am better with solving PC problems.

I hope you find the problem soon, and I am sorry I could not help more. [:(]

LarryP, thanks for your replies. [;)]

I reinstalled again, this time to the Program Files directory rather than the C:\ drive.

I also left behind all but my last saved game file and that seems to have done the trick. I can now get to the Load a Saved Game window. And my last save does load. [:D][:D][:D]

Perhaps the problem was with the number of saved slots I had used. All had a couple of lines of player notes as well. I guess I'll have to keep maybe a week's worth of saves and keep hand-written notes.

Comments causing the problem that's a new one on me but then I only use one word at most. It could have been that one of the saves was fubar-ed and that's what was throwing the game for a loop.

Excellent! I am glad you can play again now. I will keep my comments down to a minimum from now on too. I usually fill the comment line about half. You may be the first person to find this out about game saves.

i've filled every game slot in the past and never had a problem. i doubt that this could have been the problem in of it itself (athough possibly it could interact with another problem to cause a crash).

When the game first came out, I had corrupted files a few times and they seemed to correspond with the slot above having more comments than the others? I stopped puting so many comments in and haven't had a problem since.

I believe the flowed to a second line in all cases...so I stopped filling the line.

I don't know if that was it but all my corrupted files corresponded with the overflowed line in the slot above it...

It only happened like twice. It was when me and Wobbly first started our game. We were chitchatting in the comments...we started doing the chitchat in the e-mail and didn't have any problems.

Yes - we exchange brief insults/comments in our e-mail games, but never got to 2 lines. i'll point this out to the programmers to maybe bulletproof this...

Yeah the comments probably were NOT intended to function as a chat room! [;)]
