Gameplay Tip: Stand down that CAP

Post by Prince of Eckmühl »

Regardless of what's been said or written regarding CAP, stand them down at night. If you don't they'll sustain operational casualties (prange, prange, prange) as though they were actually defending a base or carrier between dusk and dawn.

What does "prange" mean.

It's an operational mishap, botched landing or takeoff, for instance.

They were more likely to occur on a carrier, because, well, all that stuff was just harder to do on a ship. [;)]

Hi PoE,

The only squadrons that should fly cap at night are night trained squads and these squads will incur normal operational losses (ie prangs etc) the same way normal cap does during the day. This is mentioned in the manual under section 9.7 (the note at the end). If these casualties are being taken by non-night trained squadrons during night, then there is a problem which i can't replicate here. If so, can you send through a save game where the prangs have occurred to support@ssg.com.au.

Hi alexs,

What's happening is that units assigned to CAP launch while its still dark, at 0410, I believe. That's when they incur losses. Are the units adversely affected by the pre-dawn, night-time launch? Are they more likely to incur damage for having launched before dawn?

I am the unhappy product of a dark educational practice known as phonics, "if it sounds right, you're okay, for everything except spelling of course." Combine that reality with an author's name and the unfortunate confluence will likely witness me forever making reference to "Gordon what's-his-name" and to aircraft, simply "crashing," hereabouts.

Prang'd again!

Taking off at night is riskier than doing so during the day, but not by much. Landing at night, for non night-trained squadrons is where the problems really start and the casualties mount.

I'd imagine that most naval aviators found it challenging enough to land on a carrier during day (even under ideal conditions).

Landing at night is pretty darned weird, even on a well-lit field.

Perceptual distortion leads you to believe that you're closer to the surface than you really are, and so you flare too soon.

No big deal in Stearman, but definitely a bad hair-day in a Grumman.
