Vichy France

Post by Phatguy »

Okay, where is Vichy France? I now it's created but I just dont see its borders. It was a nominally "independent" entity for a while.
Also what's up with Algeria? Shouldn't that area fall into the Vichy camp instead of being independent?

I guess Algeria is the game's way of representing the Vichy Regime. You could do a lot more with Vichy. For example, Germany could have the option of not accepting a Vichy in southern france (which would be a change), but have a chance of acquiring a Destroyer in the Med...in which case there would still be French Units in Algeria a Syria.
Or Germany could accept a Vichy-Style arrangement, but the Brits might have a chance of aquiring French Naval units in North Africa if they have troops in France when France falls (ie the delicate psychology that enabled the RN to intern French ships in Alexandria but blow them up at Mers-el Kabir in Algeria would be eased if the UK was still trying to save France in France)

Or...there could be a range of possibilities: Syria might go Allied and Algeria might go Vichy and the French Navy might go either way. Some have suggested (in in Finest Hour) that the intertwined fate of the French and Royal Navies was the primary concern of the US in the summer of 1940 and that the Canadian assurance that the RN would end up in Canada at worst..coupled with the RN attack on the French at Mers el-Kabir...were the crucial incidents in getting a definite US committment to help the Commonwealth.

A lot of room for optional rules in the area of Vichy and the French Navy.
The corpus of a thousand battles rises from the flood.

Yes it is a missed opertunity when you ignore those possibilities to spice up the game.

Couldn't agree more. It just seems so generic.
