AAR: Defense of the USSR - German turn 3

Post by tweber »

I continue to advance along a broad front. In the North, I will focus on crossing the Dvina at Riga and Dvinsk. See my plan below. I will prepare my attacks with air, artillery, and naval strikes. To capture Riga, I will cross the road south of the city and attack the artillery units north of the city. My objective is to cut off the city from the North and East and attack from multiple sides (an attack from multiple sides gives coordination bonuses. Once Riga is isolated, I will bring up infantry for the assault.

Farther south along the Dvina, I also plan to cross in force by Dvinsk. I air strike the units and use my engineers to build a bridge to the north to flank the defenders.

See the picture below.

I am successful in crossing the river which I cross in force. I find a weak HQ two hexes NE of Dvinsk (Central Front). I attack from 3 quarters and then finish off with an air strike. Destroying HQs will hamper all subordnate units. In the SE of the picture below, there is a Russian armored unit with no vertical bar on the left side. The color code of the unit indicates which HQ it is attached too. This unit was likely to have been attached to the HQ that was destroyed and should be weak next turn.

In the extreme South, my objectives are to take Odessa and make a bridgehead across the Dneiper. Odessa is important since it is a port and can draw supply from Sevastopol. I also prepare my attacks with artillery and airstrikes. See the plan below.

My attacks are also successful. I cross the Dneiper and am not out of supply since the river blocks supply. I need to hold this hex until next turn until I can get my engineer unit up to re-bridge the river. If I can hold this bridge head, I open up the road to Kharkov and the Crimea. I am optimistic since the unit is relatively strong.

In the Center and the South, I am also successful.  After a hard fight with air, artillery, and infantry / engineers; I capture Kiev although the Russians hold the far shore of the Dneiper.  In the center, my troops blow past Minsk and are making for Smolensk.  So far, so good.

The capture of Minsk (a Soviet production city) means I capture and can re-use Soviet war material. Extra tanks, artillery, and trucks are available to AG Center. Trucks are critical to mobility they will help continue to push my infantry forward.

The Soviets are desperate and leave Minsk a smoking ruin.
