What does "AI Advantage" perference setting do?

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

What does "AI Advantage" perference setting do?

Post by TerribleIvan »

Greetings SPWAW fans everywhere!

I have a question, which I wasn't able to find a straight answer to anywhere. I hope some veteran here can provide an answer :)

There are two separate AI related settings in the preference screen:

1). AI Advantage, which can be set to ON or OFF, and default is OFF.

2). AI Level, which can be set to a number up to 200, and the default is XXX I think.

I kinda understand that the "AI Level" setting changes the experience/morale type rating for the AI.

However, my qestion is, what does the first setting "AI Advantage" do if I set it to ON? And if it's to provide AI more purchase points, then how many more points are we talking about here??

I know that for each individual battle in a long campaign you can also change the battle to "Easy", "Medium", or "Hard" to give the AI less or more purchase point. So that's why I'm not sure if this mysterious "AI Advantage" setting is another way to give AI more points in addition to the "Hard" battle setting?

Thanks in advance and have a good battle!

Ivan the (not so) Terrible :)

Computer Advantage (AI ADVANTAGE)– If "Computer Advantage" is on, the computer opponent willreceive some free units, to make the game more challenging. In small battles, this canunbalance the game.

For some reason when I change that east, medium, hard battle to hard battle X2 they send like 8 units at me. I do not think that is specifically hard.

Well, THERE'S your problem!

There is a fixed number of Formations and Units allowed for the entire game; your 7000 points are eating up much of the AI's unit slots...no wonder it doesn't send many units against you!

400 Units, 200 Formations IIRC are the limits per side,

I know about the limit, but I regularly play PBEM games with 10,000 points per side (against Alby and others), and we don't usually use up our formation limit.

Playing with 7000 points shouldn't use it up? [&:]

That would probably answer it, I do believe I hit the limit when I was buying units. But I doubt I could have used up that many slots.

If the AI has 20,000 points to begin with, and it uses up most of its available unit or formation slots with this amount, setting the Hardx2 switch is not going to give it more slots to fill, just a lot more points to waste, because it will finish filling the Unit/Formation limitation and quit buying.

The limits are 100 Formations/400 Units per side; once either of these is reached, the purchase routine is stopped. I would suspect that your AI is not spending all its 20,000 points anyhow before reaching those limits.

Actually, it doesn't work like described above.

The way it actually works is that if the computer has more than 20,000 points to spend, then you get a "wraparound" effect (or numeric overflow, whichever term you prefer).

The effect is that only the "remainder" (where "points to spend" - 20,000 = "remainder") is spent by the computer.

Thus, if the computer has 23,456 points to spend, then it will only spend the 3,456 (the "remainder").

Bottom line:  Always ensure that the computer never gets more than 20,000 points to spend.
