Year 79:
June 23 - Titus succeeds his father Vespasian as Roman emperor.
August 24, beginning of eruption of Mount Vesuvius which destroys Pompeii and Herculaneum (this kills Pliny the Elder).
Roman Emperor Titus dedicates the famous Roman Colosseum.
Gnaeus Julius Agricola enters Scotland but is resisted by the Caledonians.
To please the Senate, Titus exiles his Jewish mistress, Berenice of Cilicia.
In China, a commission of scholars canonizes text of works of Confucius and his school.

Well, Sulla "might not have been the worst leader" Rome had, but he certainly was quite a bloody one... no pity from me, i think...
BTW, if i had to guess, i'd guess it was liver or kidney failure that did in Sulla...

I wanna ask the Thread Brothers for advice. I recently decided that I'm sick to death of sitting on my tuches and crying about lost loves. As long as its summer, I wanna get out and see some stuff. Can any brethren suggest some places where one might go on a weekend trip from NYC to air oneself out? Historical themes are preferred, but any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, guys.
Some great suggestions so far.
There are Civil War battlefields, and then there's Gettysberg. The only place that comes close to it is Shilo, but that's a bit of a drive from NYC for a weekend. [;)]
I'll second the mention of my old hometown, Baltimore. Taking the train would be very easy for you. Right in the Inner Harbor is the beautifully restored USS Constellation, Civil War era frigate. Also open to tour is the USS Torsk, WWII sub. Within walking distance of the Constellation, you have Camden Yards for a baseball game (I can't call it an Orioles game in good concience [;)]), ESPN Zone, the National Aquarium, and all the food you could want. A short cab ride away is Fort McHenry, sight of a bombardment attack during the War of 1812 and birthplace of the Star Spangled Banner.
Ok, I'll stop now. [:D]
