Is it possible to do fighter sweeps over a specific target area?

I think it's possible to do this by launching a "strike" missson on a land base or port, and only have escort fighters in the strike.

I tried it (from Lae to PM) and it hasnt worked - fighters returned and no combat occured.

I have tried this by just send one squadron of fighters not cohesive from the rest of the strike. This means that their TOT will be -30. Ideally, it should totally disrupt the CAP prior to the main strike force, but I don't see this having an impact.
