Cardinal reliever Kent Peterson was awarded the win.

Cincinnati, Monday August 11. A late-night chartered-flight trip to Cincinnati, check-in at the hotel, a few hours sleep, and then we head to Crosley Field.

Warren Spahn showed his mastery, throwing 97 pitches (73 for strikes) in a 8-1 complete-game victory. He allowed 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2. Warren's record improves to 19-5, with a 2.43 ERA.

Pittsburgh, August 13. The Pirates host the Cubs for a single game. A number of players were rested today, so the lineup was radically revamped.

The Cubbies' Joe Beggs ended up pitching a 4-2 complete game victory over the Bucs. Don Newcombe suffered the loss.

The Giants once again aid the Pirates, shutting out the Phillies 3-0.

The Bucs have an off-day on Thursday, but at Shibe Park the Phillies defeat the Giants 5-1, trimming the Pirates' lead to one and a half.

A home weekend 4 game series against the Cardinals is next.

A quick note on the Pirates' farm system: Woody Main, who was acquired in the Bob Lemon trade, is 2-1 with a 1.77 ERA in AAA. He's showing some tremendous potential for the future. Also, in AA, 20-year-old 1B Joe Adcock is batting .321, with 9 HR and 53 RBI. Looks like he'll be ready to move up in 1948.

Pittsburgh, August 15. Mickey Harris wins and Spec Spea earns his 1st save as the Bucs down the Redbirds 8-5. Bobby Shantz took the loss.

At Yankee Stadium, Bob Lemon got the win as the Yankees defeat the Red Sox 11-5.

In Philadelphia, the Phillies squeaked past the Dodgers 9-8. Brooklyn has now lost 6 in a row.

Saturday, August 16. A 13-inning marathon. It ends in the bottom of the 13th when Carl Furillo hits a sac fly, scoring George Kell and giving the Bucs a 2-1 victory. Earl Johnson was credited with the win, and Bucky Walters suffered the loss.

In Philadelphia, the Phillies handed the Dodgers their 7th straight loss by a score of 11-3.
They play a doubleheader on Sunday.

Sunday, August 17. The Bucs & Cards play two. In game one Larry Jansen pitched a complete game victory, defeating Howie Pollet. The final was 8-4.

In the second game Don Newcombe scored a complete-game shutout. He allowed 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4 in the 6-0 victory. Bobby Shantz took the loss. Gil Hodges also had an outstanding game, going 5 for 5 with 3 RBI.

The Phillies took both games over the Dodgers, winning 2-1 and 4-3. Dem Bums have now lost 9 in a row.

The Bucs have Monday off.

Boston, August 19. The Pirates come back in the 9th to win it 5-4. Early Wynn, in relief of Mickey Harris, got the victory, and Ken Gables earned the save by pitching the bottom of the 9th. Johnny Mize got his 17th HR of the year off of Harris in the 3rd.

At Shibe Park, the Phillies beat the Cubs 9-4 to stay within one and a half.

In the junior circuit, the race is heating up. The Yankees have lost three straight, so the A's are within one game with the Tigers right behind them at two back.

August 20. Warren Spahn attempts to become the first 20-game winner of the season. He will be facing another lefty, the Braves' Joe Page.

Page didn't finish the game, but Spahn did, getting his 20th win with a 8-0 shutout. Warren struck out 10 and walked only 1. He gave up 7 hits. Braves' reliever Johnny Gee took the loss.

Warren Spahn (20-5, 2.30, 15 CG in 32 starts, 6 shutouts) is well on his way to surpassing his 1946 season (23-13, 2.51, 17 CG in 39 starts, 4 shutouts).

Next up is a visit to the Polo Grounds for three against the Giants. Before the first game, Pitt manager KG Erwin talked to the press:

"Honestly, I think this team is better than last year's. A lot of attention is focused on our pitching, but the current batting lineup is performing well. Look at the distribution of RBIs -- it evens out throughout the batting order. No, we don't hit a lot of home runs, but we get a lot of doubles, triples, and timely singles. We also have some good baserunners. We work together to produce runs and produce wins. Some of the names change, but the core of this team is solid, and I hope to keep it intact for the near future, barring any serious injuries."

New York, August 21. Larry Jansen beats Ken Raffensberger with a 1-0 complete game win. Larry struck out 4, walked 2 and allowed 5 hits.

In Philadelphia, the Cardinals beat the Phils 7-4.

Friday, August 22. Orval Grove pitched the CG and defeated Don Newcombe 8-2. Cullenbine and Mullin homered for the Giants, while Duke Snider hit a solo shot for the Bucs in the 9th.

Saturday, August 23. The Giants pounded the Pirates 11-4. Hal Newhouser got the CG victory, and Mickey Harris took the loss.

The Phillies have dropped 3 in a row, so the Bucs maintain a 2.5 game lead.

In the AL, it is a three team race, with the Tigers now just a half-game behind the Yankees. The Athletics are 1.5 back.

The road trip continues with three games against the Dodgers at Ebbets Field.

League-leaders: the Pirates' Del Ennis leads in batting with a .346 avg. The Browns' Ralph Kiner has 27 HR. Ted Williams of the Phillies has 83 RBI. The Pirates' Warren Spahn leads in wins, ERA and CG (20, 2.30, 15). The strikeout leaders are the Giants' Hal Newhouser and the White Sox' Tex Hughson, each with 150.

Sunday, August 24. The amazing Warren Spahn does it again, with a CG 6-1 victory over the Dodgers' Allie Reynolds. Warren gave up 5 hits and 2 walks and struck out 6. Spahn is now 21-5 with a 2.26 ERA, and has completed 16 of his 33 starts.

The Bucs lead the Phillies by 3 games. The 3rd place Dodgers are 22 games out.

In the AL , there is now a virtual 3-way tie between the Yankees, the Tigers and the Athletics.

Monday, August 25. Two of the Dodgers' four hits were solo HRs by Rube Walker, and those were the only runs Brooklyn scored. Larry Jansen (17-9, 2.92) went the distance, allowing two walks and striking out five. Ewell Blackwell took the loss in a 5-2 Pirate win.
Jansen's last three starts have been complete games.

Tuesday, August 26. Don Newcombe (12-9. 3.70) struggled in the last couple of innings, but held on to complete the game and defeat Dick Fowler (12-12, 3.82) 8-7. Gil Hodges hit a grand slam in the first inning. Stan Musial added a 2-run shot in the third.

The Phillies were shut out by the Reds 2-0. The Bucs now lead them by 4.5 games.

In the AL, the Yankees have dropped 5 in a row. The Athletics lead by a half game. The Indians and Tigers are one back, the Browns are just two games back. The true drama is being played out in the junior circuit.

We next play a single game at Shibe Park against the Phillies, and then have Thursday and Friday off.

For Wednesday, several position players are given an advance on a three-day rest. Joe Kuhel starts at 1B, Hank Majeski at 3B, Richie Ashburn in CF. Stan Musial, Carl Furillo and George Kell will not play. Early Wynn will get the start on the mound, bumping Mickey Harris.

What a dramatic game it turned out to be, with timely hits, 4 fielding errors by both sides, stolen bases, inspired and insipid pitching. The Pirates' "super-substitutes" pulled it out and won it 3-2. Earl Johnson was awarded the victory, Spec Shea earned a save, and Joe Dobson was saddled with the loss.

In the AL, the Yankees' collapse continues with their 6th straight loss. The Indians and As now share the lead. It's a five-team race.

In the NL, the Bucs lead the Phillies by five and a half.

On Saturday and Sunday we face the Cubs in Wrigley Field.

Saturday, August 30. A wild game that saw four HRs hit, including two grand slams, one by Stan Musial and the other by the Cubs' Charlie Keller. The Cubs' Stan Spence also homered.

Musial ended up hitting two homers, the second one being a three-run shot in the 7th. Stan "The Man" ended up 3 for 5 with 7 RBI.

(Personal commentary offered by Pitt manager KG Erwin: "Stan has not yet become comfortable with playing at Forbes Field. However, on the road he has been much more effective. That's something I just can't explain.")

The Pirates won it 13-6, with Warren Spahn getting his 22nd win and Spec Spea pitching three effective innings to earn his 3rd save. Kirby Higbe took the loss.

St. Louis, Sept.1. A Monday double-header. In Game 1, Mickey Harris had a 4-0 shutout going into the 9th, but he tired and gave up 3 runs. Spec Shea came in to save it for him. Bobo Newsom took the loss. Pirates win 4-3.

Game 2: The Bucs lead until the 8th, when Ken Gables blew the save, and the win, by giving up two runs. Jake Wade won it 4-3, and Bucky Walters earned his 4th save.

At this point, the Pirates have the best record in the majors (90-46), and lead the 2nd place Phillies by 5.5 games.

In the AL, the Athletics have won 5 in a row, and lead the Browns by 1.5 games. The Yankees are 2 GB, and the Indians are 3 GB.

In the batting race, the Pirates' Carl Furillo (.340/4/84) and Del Ennis (.339/8/75) are the leaders. This is a most unusual occurrence. The lead changes hands on a nearly daily basis.

Needless to say, the Pittsburgh media are beside themselves, and engage in endless debates on the batting order (Ennis bats 3rd, Furillo 4th).

Pitt manager KG Erwin fends off the questions, with the typical response being "I set the lineups according to our needs for the day. I don't manage by reading opinion polls."

Pittsburgh, Wednesday, Sept. 3. The Reds come to Forbes, and Warren Spahn is on the mound. Spahn got his 23rd win, 17th CG and 7th shutout in blanking the Reds 3-0. Eddie Smith took the loss.

Thursday, Sept. 4. Larry Jansen faces Dizzy Trout. Neither starter finished as it went to 12 innings. Ken Gables lost it, Paul Erickson got the win. Reds win it 6-3.

Pittsburgh, Sunday, Sept. 7. A single game against the last-place Cubs. The pennant races are tightening up. The Phillies have won three straight and are 4 GB of the Pirates.

In the AL, the Browns are surging, having won 5 in a row, and are just a half game behind the Athletics. The Yankees trail by one game. The Indians are 2.5 games back.

With having Friday and Saturday off, the Bucs will start Mickey Harris. Every game is becoming critical in the waning days of the regular season.

Mickey Harris struck out pinch-hitter Clint Conatser to complete a 5-hit 2-0 shutout of the Cubs. Harris had 4 strikeouts and issued only one walk. Joe Beggs took the loss.

The Bucs' "magic number" is 12.

Monday was an off day, and next is two games with the Giants. The Pirates' home stand extends through September 18. The only remaining road game is a double header vs the Reds on the 21st.

KG Erwin has set his projected starts for ace Warren Spahn: on the 10th vs New York, the 14th vs Philadelphia, the 18th vs Brooklyn, the 23rd vs St. Louis, and the 28th (the last regular-season game) vs Cincinnati. IF the Bucs make it to the World Series, then, Warren would probably be ready to pitch the opening game.

Tuesday, Sept. 9. Don Newcombe (13-9, 3.72) got the win and Early Wynn earned his 5th save by facing the tying run in the 8th. The final was 9-4. Losing pitcher Hal Newhouser (14-15, 3.86) gave up six runs in the first inning but settled down and stayed on the mound until the 7th.

In the AL, the Browns now lead the As by 1 percentage point (.540 to .539). The Yankees are a half game back, and the Indians trail by one.

Wednesday, Sept. 10. Warren Spahn had a shutout spoiled in the 9th, but pitched his 18th CG in the 4-1 win. Spahn is now 24-5 with a 2.29 ERA. Dave Koslo (10-15, 3.61) took the loss.

With 13 games left to play, the Pirates hold a 5-game lead over the Phillies.

In the AL, the Indians defeated the Yankees 3-1 and the Browns beat the As 7-2. This gives the Browns a one game lead over the As and Indians, with the Yankees 1.5 back.

Minor league news: the Pirates released 19-year-old single-A pitcher Charlie Bicknell and signed 21-year-old RP Jim Suchecki.

Thursday, Sept. 11. The first of a three game series with the Braves. With 1 out in the bottom of the 10th, Buddy Kerr singled and drove in Stan Musial from 3rd to win it 4-3. Johnny Gee gave up the winning run and took the loss, while Ken Gables was awarded the victory.

(Association note: going forward from today I will be using PS version 1.61).

Friday, Sept. 12. The Braves' Johnny Vander Meer got a 7-3 CG victory over Mickey Harris. Vander Meer gave up 10 hits, walked one and struck out three.

Saturday, Sept. 13. Hank Wyse defeats Don Newcombe 4-3.

(Using version 1.63 now)

Sunday, Sept. 14. Double-header against the Phillies.

Game 1. A 17-inning marathon finally ended when Stan Musial doubled in the bottom of the 17th, scoring Del Ennis from 1st. Steve Roser took the loss, and Pete Gebrian got the win. The final was 6-5.

Game 2. The lights were switched on at Forbes Field before this one even started. Pitt manager backed himself into a corner for this game, as starter Larry Jansen is the only rested pitcher he has left. The good news is that the Phillies aren't in any better shape.

Philly won this one 3-2. Randy Gumpert got the win, Ray Poat earned a save and Jansen took the loss.

The Bucs have a two day break.

In these two days, the Browns now have a one game lead over the Indians. The Tigers, having won seven straight, are three games back. Other AL teams still in contention are the Athletics and the Yankees.

The Bucs still hold a 3-game lead over the Phillies. Every other NL team is now mathematically eliminated from contention.

Pittsburgh, Wednesday Sept.17: Don Newcombe wins it and Spec Shea gets the save as the Bucs defeat the Dodgers 3-1. Brooklyn reliever Luis Aloma takes the loss.

In the AL, the Indians and Browns are tied at 80-65. The red-hot Tigers have won 8 in a row and are just two games behind.

Thursday Sept. 18: The Dodgers held a 5-3 lead going into the 8th, but reliever Emil Kush blew up and the Pirates scored 7 runs. The Bums managed 1 run in the 9th but the damage had been done. Early Wynn was credited with the 10-6 victory.

The next games will be a Sunday doubleheader against the Reds in Cincinnati.

As of Sunday, the Browns hold a one game lead over the Indians. The Tigers are one and a half back, having extended their win streak to 9 games. The Pirates' "magic number" is two.
