What role does gas have in the game?

Gas improves artillery attacks - but each of eth 3 (I think its 3) levels you can get is only effective for 1 turn IIRC, so the best way of using it is in conunction with a massed offensive, so you can get its effect across as many hexes as possible on that one turn.

If I recall from the old ADANAC site, isn't there some negative political backlash if your side is the first to use gas? I seem to have read that there was a price to pay if you were the one who initiated the first gas attack.

There may have been something about it once, but I don't recall there being anything like that in hte beta versions.

Thanks...perhaps it was tied to USA war readiness which would increase if the Germans used gas first, or decrease if the Allies used it first. Anyway, that was a long time ago and my memory may be flagging a bit as I enter Old Fartdom......
