Need some help with game start

Post by docpaul »

OK..I've been playing soley small scenarios. I enjoy them but it's time to move on....I loaded CHS and Andrew's map. I figured I'd do the 5/2/42 start to save myself a bit of work which may make it easier....playing Allied...but quite frankly I don't know where to start! lol I've been looking at this map for a half hour and haven't done a thing....sounds stupid I know...anyone want to jump start me? PLEASE! I'll be doing something but any beginning moves would be a big help. I'm beginning to think it may be easier to start with Pearl harbor, just to get in the flow. I think I'm stuck since I don't really know where the KB is going, except Midway ish. I had to write this but the fear should pass.<VBG> soon I hope!!
Sorry to bug you guys! Really !

I am by no means a veteran of this game, but I can relate to you as I did the same exact thing! I stared at the map and did nothing for a long time. Finally I ended the 1rst turn and ran it another time to see what the AI would do. That gave me an idea of how to counter. I did not make any move at all. I just ran it two times to see what I was up against. It got me going. [;)]

Well here's a question. I know you can't do much with factories and such as the ALlies, but on the icons at the bottom, resources, manpower etc..why would you turn them off? DO you have to do anything with them?
It is a bit overwhelming. I have a pretty good handle on the smaller scenarios but what a false sense of security! [:)]
Like in CHina and Burma/India area...SHould I move troops up? Leave them there? This would be tough vs a human. I'm looking at Australia...You could take half of the cities by sneezing, there's noone home! Oh well..time to move my 30 subs out of Pearl! Thanks for the support Larry!

Here's another..Seattle...Shipyard Repair 850 points, Local Shipyard repair 100...what does that 100 do? IS 850 the actual amount? How long does that last...?

The resources and such need to be turned off if they are in imminent danger of being damaged...if they are damaged, the base uses 100 supply point to repair one point of the damage. Can you spend that much there?...that is the question YOU have to answer mister CinCPacFlt.[:D]

The ship repair points...

A 100x shipyard can accumulate up to 4x it's number, then it stops accruing. (400 points max accrual)

A ship uses points to the equivalent to it's durability when it gets the dice roll for the additional point of repair that the shipyard gives.

Cheers.

Just on the ones that have an icon at the bottom of the screen (oil, manpower, etc.)

Thanks Yankee..didn't get the two values...
Here's another for anyone! Free Dental work for whoever helps the most!!! lol Seems like ALL the airgroups need ALOT of pilots..what's the catch? I assume the best ones go first so should I fill out the frontline/ or those that will be once moved first? Seems like all the groups are 1/2 full... Sorry to be a pain but the two manuals help, but not specifically enough. Don't even ask me about supply convoys yet!!

Start by building up your bases, move planes to those bases, do naval searches, etc. Do not worry about the Allied supplies, you get a ton of oil, supplies, and resources.
Lucky for you, tonight it's just me

There ya go again CinCPacFlt!!![:D]

The allies get as many pilots as they need but alot of them are very green.

I disband alot of them at start if they are not immediately needed. Click 'reform in 90 days' and by then you have plenty of planes and pilots. Just don't overdo this or you will put yourself in a bind.

Cheers.

I'm just trying to reinforce the soon to be key bases..PM, Milne, Midway etc. Sending supply and fuel to Noumea, lUgan and such. Organizing some searches. I moved the B17's closer to PM area to search more. Not alot of damaged ships. Just 2 BB's at Pearl, the Nevada is in Seattle. I have to rid myself of the short scenario mentality..I started doing too much....Just tedious at the moment since nothing is in motion....I'm calming down a bit....[&:]

I jumped into the big scenario both feet first...I restarted a dozen times. I'd play for a month of game time, learn lessons and restart.

Don't be afraid to just play...learn a bunch, then start a serious game.

My main headache in the early part of my games is sorting which AA units, Art units and such go to Midway, Johnson Island, Palmyra, etc. And I've been playing this game to the near exclusion of all others since the second day it was available.

I figure that I'll be doing well if I can finish a game in less time than the war actually took!

I started in Sept '06 real time with the Scenario 15 full war and am now at 4-15-1943 in game, so you will likely be playing the same game next summer. But the time it takes for each turn will get less and less.

I don't mind making mistakes as this is war and that is how the real war went. Early on I lost the Saratoga by getting too close to Kwajalein. Then I lost three British carriers near Lautern when KB materialised out of thin air. Painfull, but you learn.

You can't look at it like 'this turn is taking too long'. If you enjoy the game, just take whatever time it takes to make the moves you need to make. Planning ahead works wonders. I'd for sure send all the supplies and fuel you can to Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane that you can, and disperse outward as neccessary. Better to have that stuff on hand than have to wait.

I didn't do anything with the troops in China for the first whole year, maybe a mistake but I was busy learning the game and most of the action was elsewhere. Now the Chinese are engaged. All six CVs of the KB are sunk and I'm invading one or more bases daily.

One last thing, use the B-17s and B-24s in concentration to annihilate a base and all its assets. Don't nit and pick. You don't want fair fights.

I enjoy the game I just don't have a clue! Thought I did! It's mostly the Asia area I am clueless on. Aside from Pacwar wayback, all of my scenarios have been US-KB so I never really got to Asia, much less production AND supply....Ran the first turn right before bed and of course i forgot a few major areas..lol..so I 'm going to fix that and redo. Like someone else said I'll probably restart a few times as i just learn what to do with the *new elements* I've never used. The time scale takes some getting used to. Being used to the quicker scenarios makes you think there's a major battle around every corner every couple of days...gotta get over that too! But I appreciate everyones help...you guys must get sick of us noobs repeating the same questions over and over! Sometimes it's easier to ask than rifle through the 200 pafes of threads and Faq's on the desk!

The best advice I got on playing these hard games was this: Don't worry about making mistakes, get in there and do anything that will get something done. You can always start over anytime. Get those turns in as that's where you learn. Try everything you can think of to see what the outcome will be. Read the manual and ask questions too, but experience is the most important thing to remember. Don't be afraid to make mistakes! That's how you learn the game.

Anyway, it was something like that and it helped me a lot. I used to sit and stare, wondering what to do as I did not want to make mistakes and I was bent on winning. I had to forget about winning in the beginning.

Go for it and have fun. Hey, you didn't become a dentist overnight?! [;)]

If you are new to the game, there's no reason to be trying to launch major actions on all fronts at all times. (Heck, even if you aren't new to the game there's little reason to do that.) If you can't think of something to do on a given front, then don't do anything. Set some bombers to Naval Attack, some others to Airfield and Port Attack, your fighters to Escort with a large percentage on CAP, make sure your LCUs have their objective set to their current location and move on to someplace else where you do think you know something to do. Spend several turns just watching aircraft bomb to get a feel for where your aircover extends to and where it doesn't. Then start worrying about what bases you want to reinforce or attack. Once you know that you just look for what units to do so with and how to get them there. One step at a time.
This game does not have a learning curve. It has a learning cliff.

"Bomb early, bomb often, bomb everything." - Niceguy

Any bugs I report are always straight stock games.
