CV Cabot - RHS

Post by Fletcher »

I dont know if it is a bug or it is intentioned. I see at RHS CVO oriented last updated that CV Cabot will come like reinforcement at New Orleans like a CV Essex fast carrier unit.
USS Cabot (CVL-28)received her name on June 23 shortly after the ESSEX class ship CV-16 -originally named CABOT- was renamed LEXINGTON.
Probably you are intentioned design this if USS Lexington CV-2 is sank before 1944 and she will come like an ESSEX class. I am not sure, but then... what happens with the original CVL Cabot ??. Could be possible that she is CVL Willmington at RHS -name that she received when was laid down as light cruiser CL-79 before rerodered as light carrier on Jun 1942- ?.
Then...the same is correct for USS Yorktown, USS Hornet and USS Wasp ? .. It is needed that she sank before 1944 to enter like an Essex class carriers ?
CV-10 Yorktown, CV-12 Hornet or CV-18 Wasp could not be commisioned ? . I have doubts about, because USS Yorktown CV10 was the second of Essex fast carrier class. She must be commisioned with another name if the original USS Yorktown (Enterprise class) was not sank. The same for Hornet or Wasp.
Thanks in advance.

In RHS there is not respawn of Allied Carriers.

The original CABOT was renamed Hornet if I recall correctly

RHS has used the original names of the Essex CVs, thus you recieve the correct nº of carriers regardless if the early war US carriers are sunk or not

Excuse me, Bliztk, but you are wrong. USS Cabot was laid down as light cruiser wilmington (CL-79) on 16 March 1942 and reordered as a light carrier on Jun 4th 1942. She received her name on June 23 shortly after the ESSEX class ship CV-16 -originally named CABOT- was renamed LEXINGTON.
Well...at RHS the Essex fast carrier class count with 16 units : Essex, Bon Homme Richard, Intrepid, Kearsage, Franklyn, Hancock, Randolph, Cabot, Bunker Hill, Oriskany, Ticonderoga, Bennington, Boxer, Valley Forge, Antietam and Shangri-La. But actually the Essex fast carrier class count with the same more LAKE CHAMPLAIN, YORKTOWN, HORNET and WASP. There is 4 less than RHS.
Escuse me for my poor english, but it is not my native laguage.
Cheers

RHS List = Valley Forge, Kearsage, Cabot, Oriskany in real life were commisioned after WWII ended.
RHS has no reinforcements after 1 september 1945 to free slots for earlier (and more used things)

So in real life Lexington II, Hornet II, Wasp II, Yorktown II commision dates are assigned to those ships in RHS

This is all somewhat confusing and difficult to work out - but the explanations were all posted on the Forum - are all documented in the RHS Carriers spreadsheet - and explained as well in the RHS manual. We defeated respawn for major ships - including cruisers and carriers - after several attempts to figure it out - with help by testers from Matrix - and confirmed in our tests. What matters in respawn is the class slot (i.e. hard code).

We name all the ships with their original names unless they convert. We name all converted ships with their original converted name. There were a couple of cases this did not work - but I no longer remember what exactly the details were. If you look up a ship with its RHS name it may be IRL that it is a completely different ship - because IRL ships changed names. But we don't know if the original ship will sink and need renaming? CHS and stock (and every other mod) take away some ships - and have respawn. We give you the chance to get all the ships (just don't lose any) - and that created a "double naming problem" - which we solved by using the original names insofar as possible - which is virtually always. But that creates confusion because now you have a ship named "wrongly" vs real life in terms of looking it up.

One of the special cases is the fictional USS Wake. In RHSEOS - where you get two Midways as Essex class - we don't give you FDR - as he had not yet died. We call the FDR Wake - assuming there is always a battle there.

RE: CV Cabot - RHS

Post by el cid again »

The above listing is data dumped from the USN section of the RHS Carriers Spreadsheet. It lists dates for map entry in RHS Levels 5 and 6. Level 7 ships that enter at New Orleans should appear 5 days sooner. Remember that in RHS capacity is hanger capacity - and in the case of USN it is designed hanger capacity (original or the current modification - as for Lexington class), not capacity with a deck park or as a transport. There are exceptions - and they are noted - when it was found a ship could put more (or fewer) in the hanger than designed. "No air group" refers to IRL. At this time - for technical reasons - in RHS all these ships embark air groups - to provide carrier qualified groups that were generally based ashore - and replacement units that won't resize if you have a big carrier that resizes unexpectedly.
Some of these small carriers have slightly modified capacity to make the resize rule "resize" to the same size! [The resize rule applies EVEN IF the air unit is ashore. We use this and the way it interacts with deck capacity to insure a large number of carrier air units do NOT resize - so you can always find 19, 15 and 12 plane squadrons for your big CVs. Note that 19 means "18 plus 1 spare" - which was the normal case, not theory, which was 18. Similarly, 15 means "18 minus 3" or "12 plus 3 spare" - which was the normal case for torpedo units, not theory. The sum 3 x 19 plus 1 x 15 = 72.]

The notes refer to the below:

Note 1: The Essex Aircraft Carriers: "…US pre-war doctrine called for the accomodation of 72 aircraft (on the hanger deck)." p.12.
Note 2: Aircraft capacity is limited to hanger deck accomodations. WITP mechanics permit assignment of the "in practice" capacity of 80 if the rating is 72.
Note 3: Essex carrier design allowed for "an enlarged fighter squadron of 27 planes." The Essex Aircraft Carriers, p. 23.
Note 4: Hanger capacity probably about 122 aircraft. Aircraft Carriers of the World indicates typically 137 were embarked in 1945, p. 255.
Note 5: Anteitam and Boxer ordered to Western Pacific late 1945 after the historical war ended. Aircraft Carriers of the World, Pp. 229 & 230.
Note 6: No more Essex class aircraft carriers were ordered until 8/42. The Essex Aircraft Carriers, p. 171.
Note 7: Name not available because the First Bon Homme Richard was not renamed Yorktown. Another Essex class name chosen.
Note 8: "Designed for 30 aircraft, it was found 36 could be adequately be embarked." Aircraft Carriers of the World, p. 215.
Note 9: Had one transport mission to India in 1943, this ship spent most of the war on ASW duty in the Atlantic.
Note 10: Had one transport mission to PTO in 1944, this ship spent most of the war on ASW duty in the Atlantic.
Note 11: Held for issue as a respawned CVE, game name unknown.

Even though not as elegant, I think it would have prevented a lot of confusion to just name the carriers by the actual names the hulls are known by today.

You'd end up with a Yorktown II, Hornet II, etc. which might not look great if the original ship didn't sink, but it would eliminate a heck of a lot of confusion.  I suspect that you're going to be answering these questions as long as RHS exists as new players come along and get confused.  It's a bit confusing to me and I've watched it evolve!

Actually, it is a pretty confusing subject. A number of ships swapped names more than once. The standard - which is not quite perfect - of using the "first" name - may be the simplist one available. Even so - there were two or three cases where we had to do something else. I personally think it is very nice chrome to see the original names of the ships. It is also slightly more consistent: some of the "Bay" types got named completely differently - and that surely was and is confusing; some ships got names which are not part of the system at all; honoring the naming convention is in some sense more consistent than honoring the peculiar set of violations of it used IRL.

This is one of those judgement calls a modder is presented with endlessly. There is more than one acceptable solution and probably no perfect solution. My own peculiar point of view is that historical simulation is NOT an attempt to make sure "everything ends up exactly the same as IRL". Rather, it is to create a similar situation with some starting point as close as we can make it to the real world, and then permit that scenario to develop differently in each game played - according to the choices the players make. I regard it as very unlikely the pecuiliar military situation and political considerations that caused name changes in any specific case would occur in most games - and so it is in my view more likely that the original name would have been retained. There might indeed have been changes if we could replay this for real somehow, but we are not in a position to know what those changes would have been precisely. What we presented - and we do explain this in the RHS Manual - is a "clean slate" with the ships as planned - inside three slightly different sets of assumptions: the CVO set (duplicating the building choices with extensive modifications resulting from Pearl Harbor, Coral Sea and Midway), the BBO set (duplicating the original building planning pre Midway), and the EOS set (a slightly enhanced CVO set for the Allies - making choices that would have more impact on the war and less on the post war world). What we cannot know is what ships (if any) will be lost - or what ships might be picked to bear replacement names. Further - there was a demand in the Forum for "all the ships" - instead of "if you don't lose any, you never get the respawn ships" - and we met that (in our view reasonable) demand.

I will admit I didn't think of - and one suggested - naming a ship "Yorktown II" - so it was not considered. I think it would look quite strange. The chance of not having sisters with almost duplicated names is so great as to be virtually certain - and I don't think it would feel as right as the naming convention we have adopted. But I don't think it would be a horrible thing to go that way either. It took a lot of work to get this as right as possible - and I hope over time that comes to be understood and appreciated. Just compiling the above list took man-weeks of work.

This was carefully considered by Joe and I - at the time I did carriers I was working for CHS under his supervision - and he was not yet working for Matrix. We did have as context a set of complaints that carrier capacity was "too large" - opposed by a number who felt it was nice to be so large.

We concluded that for technical reasons WITP as it now exists is not able to fairly permit any deck park at all for operational carriers (and it automatically does for carriers cum transports, like it or not). The reason is that there is no mechanism for risk of loss of the deck park machines. Absent such a (hard code) mechanism, there is no way it is fair to permit any carrier to have one: the ship can sail - in any weather - with out the slightest risk it loses the excess planes - gaining operational advantages without the real risks inherant in the practice.

In addition, there is the peculiar WITP issue of squadron counts. A US CV did indeed have four line squadrons most of the time. [Here the provision that it must reduce to three for a while is wrong] But it could and often did operate with more squadrons - particularly later in the war. The Japanese experimented with adding a fourth aviation unit - it was a recon element - and eventually adopted that as SOP: each CV had four different kinds of aircraft (unlike the US - which typically had two squadrons of identical aircraft). The British were even more complicated - and might operate elements of 6 to 8 squadrons on a single (and smaller) CV than USN had. None of this is easy to model in the game. If we limit the squadrons to their historical sizes, we need to be able to add a squadron from ashore (as indeed often occurred) to be able to implement a deck park. But the moment we run a US CV to 5 squadrons, we run into a peculiar (and unexplainable) feature: all squadrons immediately drop to 9 ready planes. Hard it is to put an element of night fighters or recon planes, or an extra squadron of fighters or bombers, never mind all of them happened IRL. Basically - all this is another reason trying to fill up the deck parks is an exercise in frustration within the limits of current hard code. Since it isn't going to work anyway - why try? Since it won't work and isn't reasonably fair - we went with hanger capacity - strictly.

To this should be added that, as far as I am aware, deck parks were not used by the Japanese. Rating their ships for them in an engineering sense seems improper - given they would not use them. It may be they were well informed - I believe that is likely - but elected not to risk the valuable planes by such a practice.
