How to fire the flamethrower?

Post by nabuok »

Maybe I'm missing something but how do you fire the flamethrowers on the German SPW 251/16 Flamethrower Halftracks? No matter what they only seem to fire their machine guns at anything, even infantry in the next hex.

You gave me a clue. I found this reference in the version 1.05 upgrade notes.

"Certain vehicles (those designated in the Unit Handbook as mounting a flamethrower) can now assault bunkers/pillboxes. Such vehicles display the following icon in the lower left-hand corner of their Info Box."

So, I'm assuming the flamethrower only comes into effect when assaulting as noted above, otherwise it just fires the machine guns?

Keep the flamethrowers back most of the time and don't let them give away their position by firing their MGs. Moving them forward to assist in assaults only is the best use for them. This goes for German flamethrower HT as well as CW Wasps.

The reason the halftracks only use their flame capabilities during an assault is due to the range of the flamethrower. On the SdKfz 251/16, the flamethrower range was typically only 40 metres.

As a hex is representing 250 metres across, it only makes sense that the SdKfz 251/16 is using it's weapons representatively in the same hex as the opposing unit, an assault.

The flamethrower is what gives the unit the very high assault value.  You won't actually see or hear any flames.  The only way it evidences itself in the game is in the high assault value.

Adding a soundbite for a flamethrower unit during an assault might be something that could be added.  I remember looking for a visual or audio, but I don't believe there is one.

The Close Combat games have a really good flamethrower sound clip....
