Miss Portman[:'(], I beg to differ. Just as HMS Dreadnought made all pre-dreadnought battleships obsolete, the fast aircraft carrier made the battleship obsolete.
I don't know that I quite agree. If the other guy has BBs, I want to have BBs as well. CVs can get pulled in too many different directions sometimes. Remember Bull's Run? Just because Kurita didn't have much success on 10/25/44 doesn't mean that success that day was not possible.

Calvins dad (forgot your name), I beg to differ. There are plenty of roles the battleship can fill that the fast aircraft carrier cannot. As a fire-support platform the battleship has a place even today.

The Dreadnought made all pre-dreadnought battleships obsolete, yes. It did not make all curisers, light cruisers, destroyers and escorts obsolete though, did it?

The aircraft carrier changed the conditions under which the battleship might operate, yes, but that is a different thing entirely.

And when was the last Iowa retired? In 1990-something, yes? I know they were taking part in the first Iraqi war.
The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.
In its place we are entering a period of consequences..

Don't think Calvin's parents ever had names, come to think of it...[:D]

Anyhoo, I think we're talking at cross purposes. The Japanese didn't build the Yamato and Musashi to be fire support ships, they built them to be at the centre of the Pacific Jutland which the aircraft carrier made sure would never happen.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

CORRECTION: The fast aircraft carrier, coupled with advanced aircraft and ordnance, made the battleship obsolete as the backbone of naval combat. Anything with those guns is still going to have a usefull role in fire support....

More like,

"When it jams, fix bayonets"...

We KNOW it will jam.
The flash suppressor prevents a bayonet.
I prefer a BFR anyway.

See my last post. You don't need two 18-inch ships, which could have been exchanged for 3 or 4 14- to 16-inch gunned ships, which would have made more tactical and logistical sense.

Only if you don't get an illicit thrill from the idea of her as a porn star. [:D] (Check out 'Southland Tales' for an explanation.)
