Aircraft Substitution Bug

Post by eloso »

Hi,

Playing CHS 2.08 scenario 160 (PDU on) in this game. This might be something the developers would like to take a look at.

I'm aware of this feature that substitutes planes scheduled to arrive as reinforcements when there are insufficient numbers in the pools.

I had a group of Hudson type planes scheduled to arrive on 6/6/42 in Calcutta. I didn't bother to check the base because of bad weather in the area this turn. I got the replay back and saw this:

At first I thought I was hit with the sync bug but when checked was in sync. I checked the aircraft at base list and they were scheduled to naval attack. I checked the aircraft itself and there wasn't any mission assigned at all.

This leads me to believe that there needs to be a conditional check on the plane type if substituted and change the mission if necessary to something that the aircraft type is actually capable of performing.

Nothing wrong with that at all. If a group scheduled to appear doesnt have enough planes to outfit the group, it will attempt to equip with the next "upgrade". This is what happened.

If you look at a lot of the Brit squadrons they dont necessarily upgrade to the same plane type (fighters to bombers, bombers to transports, ect). This is probably because of the British practice of bleeding their squadrons white, disbanding them and reforming the squadron with whatever they happen to need at the time.

There is no bug here.

Missions are preset for arriving AC.

Easy fix.
Check mission staus when a group arrives.[;)]

Of course, if the AI is doing this, it might be another story.
It might take a turn or two for it to sort itself out.

The bug I'm reporting has nothing to do with why this substitution occurs. The default upgrade for the Hudson is the Dakota in this scenario.

Transport planes are not capable of Naval attack missions. That is the bug that is reported. How do you think my opponent would feel if they would have scored a hit?

@Halsey:

I agree that I should have checked the arriving aircraft group and fixed the mission myself. Too bad I'm not perfect.

I really don't care what you guys say. It isn't right and it should be modified by the code to circumvent human error. In addition, if it is possible to happen in a PBEM, then it is probably possible to happen versus the AI.

Well, no danger of a Dakota hitting anything as it has no bomb load or guns, but you are correct, the mission is set wrong and should be looked into. Will put it on the list.

I wish my Dakota's would fly combat missions.[:(]

I can see the crew chief hanging out the door throwing tins of K-rations out at enemy troops.[:D]

They could always do the old method:

1. put handgrenade in Mason jar...
2. Approach enemy
3. Pull pin on grenade, drop on enemy
4. When bottle hits land/water, it breaks, releasing arming lever on grenade
5. BOOM!

I ran into a problem that I think is related recently.  I was shifting Soviet aircraft around so no bases are overloaded and accidentally sent an SB-2 squadron to a Chinese base.  Since I couldn't move it back that turn, I figured I would move it back next turn, but forgot about it.  Then a turn or two later I started flying bombers out of that base and after setting the orders for one group, I clicked on the "Set All Bombers at This Base" button, forgetting the SB-2s were there.  Next turn the Soviet SB-2s were flying bombing missions with the Chinese bombers.  When I look at the unit, it still shows Training as the only option, but it's flying bombing missions.  If I change anything with the unit, it reverts to Training and stops flying combat.

I would expect that the Soviet Far East forces would be treated as a restricted command when inactive.  ie, nothing with that HQ can fly to a non-Soviet base.  I was a bit surprised they could fly to Chinese bases at all, as well as being surprised that they could be tricked into flying combat.

I'm sorry.
