New Guns of August Screenshots

Post by Alex Fiedler »

Bitter trench warfare never looked so good!

Matrix Games and Adanac Command Studies are elated to announce the release of a hefty pack of new screenshots for their WWI turn-based strategy game, Guns of August. The new screenshots display the wide variety of theaters and tactically enthralling gameplay that will glue gamers to their seat.

David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said “I’ve been anxiously awaiting the release of Adanac’s latest project for quite some time now and I’m confident gamers will be pleased with what’s coming. These screenshots offer just a snippet of the rich gameplay and realistic recreation of the First World War which many have tried to model, but few have succeeded.”

Guns of August puts players in command of waging World War I at a grand strategic scale from Paris to Baghdad. The entire Western, Eastern, Italian and Balkan fronts are included as are the three fronts of the Ottoman Empire. Gamers will get to try their hand at production, combat (but of course!), diplomacy, research, the horrors of the trenches, and more. Use land units like infantry corps complete with separate artillery units for precisely directing barrages on the enemy’s line. As time goes on, players must deal with changing combat situations like the introduction of Stossstruppen and even mighty tanks charging through lines to break through the stalemate! Guns of August fully supports a robust AI to fight against or play by email, so step back to the early 20th Century and hear the guns of August!

Agreed; if I am not pushing German Corps over the Russian steppe in August; I will be emotionally crushed.

Finally I get to play a game about a war my Grandfather was in!

I get to play a game my Great-Grandfather was in, and am looking forward to it.

Would have been nice if the screenshots had made it clear the game only supported one resolution, and that at a fixed screen size.

If this is "working as intended" I am going to ask for a refund.

Quite a few computer games have fixed resolutions (HoI2 being one notable one). I think it's probably a limitation of the language being used (not being able to stretch and reorganise I suppose)

I understand that perhaps it should be stated it's as fixed resolution though. In fact, in the General Discussion forum ( tm.asp?m=1519177 ), there is a post about a similar issue.

Edited to add
Back when this game started development, probably 1024x768 was the default res anyway for alot of people...and if it's a language limitation, then it would make sense that 5 years ago, the game was developed with the max "general" resolution.

I know this doesn't help if you have a super dooper screen, I'm just pointing out I understand your concern and also how the fixed resolution may have came about.

The part I find amazing about this is that in past games that have run in only one resolution full screen, people have said "if it were at least windowed, we'd have no complaints". Well, this one is windowed and yet we still get the resolution complaints.

To be fair, I think the point is more that people with much larger screens don't want this little windowed game.

I don't mind a window, but I do not like a 1024x768 fixed res game because my LCD displays it pretty badly. I have the same problem with HoI2

This is not "windowed" though. A windowed application can be resized and maximized. Putting the app in a window with a fixed resolution does not make it a windowed application.

Further, windowed applications have scroll bars, lacking here. Of course, scrolling by moving the mouse to the edge is problematic since it runs in a small window, and it is hard to get your mouse at just the right pixel to get it to scroll without the mouse going out of the window altogether.

Just to be clear, you guys are saying that as this is a fixed resolution game, and you have say, a 24" widescreen monitor, then this game will be in a small window?  No scaling at all to fill the screen???
