Difficulty Level of Blue and Grey?

Greetings.

I'm not a total newbie, but still a little wet behind the ears when it comes to "serious" strategy gaming. I wonder if this game is out of my league right now. I am salivating for it, as I love the sort of games that offer this sort of depth and strategy (it's not just about the units on the field, for instance), but fifty bucks is a lot of cash and I don't want to get stuck with a really pretty toy that I can't get into. I love strategy, possibly even more than tactics...I'm certainly better at it, anyway.
For instance, I loved Korsun Pocket and Highway to the Reich (though these are straight-up battlefield games) but I've found them perhaps a bit too challenging right now.


So I know it's still rather an ambiguous question, but does anyone have a solid idea where this game comes in difficulty-wise and whether it sounds like something I could handle?

The unit count starts out small so you can keep pretty good track of what you have; however, it does grow quickly. Organization is a key element in having success, so there's a certain amount of micromanagement to get the best results. Playing WitP may have skewed my ideas of what 'certain amount of micromanagement' means however. Finally, there is no tactical battlefield level. All actions happen on the main map.

I'm biased because I played and loved BoA. AACW is one of the best games I've ever played.

I'd say buy it -- I have been playing it continuously since the day it was released. There's a lot to learn, but the posts here will explain a lot of it, along with the manual. If you develop a methodical approach to each turn it's not too hard to keep track of everything, and you'll get a good idea of why the historical strategies were devised. The official support for the game is outstanding and I'm sure there will be player aids added by gamers along the way.

Why not download and try the demo?. It will give you a good flavour of the complexity of the game, and familiarises you with organising your units and making moves. I purchased the game after trying the demo, and have been playing it more than any other games on my HD this last several weeks.

That's a great idea - I did that before I purchased the game. The demo has a tutorial section that can give you an idea of what the mechanics are and a good feel of the game.
