The usual.
With one slight difference. Since the weather was bad I decided to have both my Zero Daitai grounded, to rest.

BURMA

No big news.
I’m airlifting an ENG Construction Bn from Moulmein with a few Topsy (it’ll take a while) and I’m ferrying some supplies with Topsy from Rangoon (I notices that it triggers the ground movement of supplies to the target).

The renewed LRCAP over Akyab has reduced the enemy air raids.
A Mohawk shot down an elite Navy Zero (A6M3)!!!

NEW GUINEA

Heavy air raid over PM.
The two Sentai shot down lots of attackers, but I lost a good number of planes on the ground.
I noticed in Timor that splitting the (36) Sentai increases significantly the repair rate.
I’ve therefore split the Tojo and Tony squadrons. I’m keeping (2) segments in PM, (2) in Buna (one resting one on LRCAP) and (2) in Lae (one resting one on LRCAP).
I should be able to keep him bleeding for every attack, while reducing my ground losses.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Port Moresby , at 54,93

CHINA

Looking good! (See pic)
Some of the forces NW of Changsha are moving NW to cut the supplies to Tuyun (or to draw troops out of the city). The rest of them is moving SW to Hengchow, where only (6) LCU are reported.
Meanwhile (2) divisions are moving from Kweilin eastbound.
I’m trying to engage the enemies in various pockets.
I’d like to push some of them into the country, while encircling and surrounding the big Changsha garrison.
If I take Hengchow, Changsha fall should only be a matter of time.
Lots of supplies have been unloaded in Canton and Shanghai.

Miscellanea

At the end of the day the air losses were: Allies (31) –Japan (24), air-to-air (27) – (1)

The Akagi Zero Daitai (the squadron to which my second top ace belongs) has been upgraded to A6M3a.

November 19th – 20th, 1942

BURMA

The CW forces tried once again to break Akyab fortifications, but met with determined resistance.
It looks like Akyab will hold for a while.

As expected the supply runs with the Topsy triggered a supply flow to Akyab.

Air superiority remains mainly Allied, but it’s not yet causing major problems.

Question: I was thinking to avoid the pasting of all the reports (it takes a while to copy, paste and edit) and to only report the relevant event. I’d like a feed-back on this from whoever is reading, Thanks.

Yesterday’s attack.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Akyab

Allied ground losses:

TIMOR

It seems that the bulk of the Australia based air force has switched his target to New Guinea.
Things are quiet in the air and all my fighters are in perfect conditions.

I threw little surprise party for the MSW on minesweeping duty at Darwin!

Allied Ships

MSW Bundaberg, Shell hits 9, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
MSW Geelong, Shell hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk

The light combat TF left Java three days ago to surprise the minesweepers. I’ve sank many and, although I haven’t mined too much, there’s no base that doesn’t have at least few hundred mines.
Hopefully this will prove a relevant obstacle.

NEW GUINEA

The Allied air offensive has overwhelmed PM defenders. As a result I was forced to withdraw one Sentai to Lae (together with the Betty squadron) and one to Buna. Too many ground losses. In the last turn I lost (61) planes to only (9) Allied.
(40) of which on the ground at PM and (10) in air-to-air! It’s probably the first time since the beginning of the war that I lost more aircraft in air-to-air.

I didn’t have enough operational fighters in New Guinea and those able to fly were surprised by an escort of several of P-38.

I’m moving an additional (36) Tony Sentai to the area. I’m not retreating one inch.

I train two squadrons till they reach exp 80.
Then I disband one into the other, downgrade and re-upgrade.

This way I can keep the squadron on the front line for a long time at full strength (just replenishing the airplanes). Also the pilots rotation reduces the fatigue.
Meanwhile the disbanded squadron (I only disband a segment) is brought back to full size and re-starts training.

It works nicely, with the Allies too. [8D]

never needed to train Allied squadrons so far!!! [:D] I´m happy with kill rates somewhere between 5 and 10:1 starting in early 43...[;)]

I usually skip the cr parts of any AAR. The tactical details are usually too many and not very important, expect something really exeptional happens. I hence prefer pictures of maps and data and the thoughts of the writer on the situation and strategy, as this is where one can learn the most.

If you gained knowledge through the forum, why not putting it into the AE wiki?

I totally agree. The only time I like seeing a cr is when it is the the most efficient way to convey the necessary information. This only happens when there is a major battle. I'd like more information on your thoughts and plans, wth a synopsis of the days events and any notable actions. Maps, of course, are always welcome.[:)]

Allied air offensive all over the board!!

The Allies are trying to break the frontline air defenses.
Everywhere the attacks have been smartly aimed at the secondary airfields, less protected and therefore more vulnerable.

Total losses: Japan (56) of which (37) on the ground – Allies (38) of which (30) in air-to-air.

In Burma: Moulmein. The main airfield for the bombers attacking Akyab besiegers.
A6M3 were on 10% CAP since they were supposed to escort the bombers.
This is where I suffered the heaviest losses.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Moulmein , at 30,34

Japanese aircraft
A6M3 Zero x 2
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 14

Allied aircraft
Wellington III x 16
P-38G Lightning x 25
B-17E Fortress x 27

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3 Zero: 2 destroyed
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 4 destroyed, 5 damaged
Ki-21 Sally: 8 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Wellington III: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged
P-38G Lightning: 2 destroyed
B-17E Fortress: 3 damaged

In the Banda Sea:
- Kendari. Light casualties on both side.
- Maumere, where only a Rufe squadron was on CAP, while the Tony were protecting Dili. Surprisingly the Rufe shot down (3) B-24! Since the Tony were on LRCAP not too many were destroyed on the ground.
- Lautem. Only B-25 attacked here and found a strong CAP. This is where the Allies paid the highest price.
- Amboina. Nobody there but a few Dinah.

In New Guinea: Buna. No squadron on CAP, all on LRCAP over PM. Only (1) Tojo out of (36) was destroyed on the ground.

I’d really like to see the auto victory screen. It’s a bit more than one month to the end of the year and the score is 40,7k to 9,4k.
For this reason I moved Burma’s bombers to China. I don’t want to lose too many points to the Allied raids. Come ’43 I’ll care less about air ground losses, but for now I’m counting points!

I’ve also slightly adjusted the various CAP and LRCAP in order not to leave any unprotected airfield, while keeping as little aircrafts on the ground as possible.

Splitting the fighters squadrons increases enormously the repair rate. I’m rebuilding all bombers squadrons to divide the (36) fighter ones.

On the ground and on the sea very little happened.
A mine laying sub in Chittagong took a chance at the MSW Patna and hit her with a torpedo, but she didn’t sink.
In the Pacific and ASW TF returning to Kwajalein after a mission encountered a minefield and a DD was damaged. She’ll be sent to Tokyo for repairs.

Soon the Musashi will be available.

22nd November, 1942

Allied bombers have been resting everywhere but in Australia.

Heavy air raid over Lautem.
Thanks to the few planes at the airfield and to the LRCAP coverage at the end of the day I lost (7) planes on the ground while he lost (10) bombers in air-to-air.

China

The encircling of the units between Kweilin and Changsha is working.
As you can see in the picture I’ve locked Japanese troops in three different locations. I hope to able to take them out one by one.
The increased bombers presence is helping. I’m targeting Chungking, Changsha and Hengchow with all my LB.

Air management

I’ve just discovered that the A6M3a combines the range of the A6M2 with the maneuverability of the A6M3!!
I’m therefore converting two of the three A6M3 factory into the (a) version. I’ll end up with some (180) A6M3a and (72) A6M3.

Mitsubishi engines need keeps growing and I’m now almost (40) units before the required amount.
On the bright side the stock is over (600), hence I shouldn’t have too much of a problem.

A rather quiet turn.

Allied bombers must be resting and I’m glad of the temporary pause.

Two mighty Japanese Divisions cleared the way between Kweilin and Hengchow in China.

A new attempt has been made by the CW forces to break through Akyab fortifications.
They didn’t gain an inch! [:D] Forts are all still there (and building) and the enemy suffered relevant losses.

The only slight issue with those attacks is the supply consumption.
After every attacks my supplies fall down to orange level and it takes at least a couple of days before they flow back from Rangoon. Not a big deal, but it’s not like the Japs have supplies to waste and it means that troops replacement are suspended for those two days.

Anyway Burma is one of my priorities, hence no risk of the Burma forces running low on supplies any time soon. [:-]

24th November, 1942

A mighty struggle over Rangoon!
Early in the morning the sky over Rangoon was nearly obscured by over 150 enemy aircrafts.

Immediately the Army fighters were scrambled to meet the attackers. A fierce battle ensued!

Several squadrons of Tony dived towards the incoming bombers, only to be met by the new fearsome Allied fighter: the P-38!
Despite the superior performance of the enemy’s machine, the skill and courage of the Imperial pilots exacted a heavy toll from the foolish attackers!!

Long live the Emperor!!!

Once again the Allies are trying to break the Air Defense Network. They won’t make it!

The pilots of the Emperor will know no rest, no sleep, no sake, no … well, maybe some!!! [:D][:D]

Anyway [:'(]
Today we saw an heavy air attack over New Guinea and some air combat over Akyab.
As yesterday the balance was in favor of the forces of Japan.

And once again the P-38 has been defeated by Tony and Tojo.

If you gained knowledge through the forum, why not putting it into the AE wiki?

BURMA

As more troops and supplies are airlifted to Akyab an unseen clash took place in the sky over the contested city.

My LRCAP Zero engaged Seafire and P-38 that were on LRCAP to intercept my transports.
I gather it was P-38 because I saw in the operations report that pilots from the 23rd FG gained kills, but I did not shoot down any US fighter and only the P-38 could perform so well.
I know there were Seafire too, because I shot down some, and because they’ve been there for over a month.
He lost (5) Seafire and I lost (3) transports and (2) A6M3. I cannot complain. [:)]

I sank one more MSW at Chittagong while laying mines. He should be real low on minesweepers. [:D]

CHINA

I’m getting closer to the goal.

Soon I’ll force him to break Tuyun encirclement and move troops out.
And I stand a real chance to wipe away Changsha defenders.
Hengchow troops will be able to retreat, but will be useless for a long time.

He is trying a diversion from Chungking towards Ichang, but there’s no way he’ll make any breakthrough there

See the map for details.

All quiet on the other fronts. The bomber squadrons are probably licking their wounds!!

Not much action, but for two exceptions.

In Burma and in the Banda Sea two of my TF sent for a quick night surprise have been spotted and attacked by Allied LB during the daylight phase.
Apparently my opponent did not enjoy much my earlier surprises and has prepared himself accordingly.

The Burma squadron (among which is the BB Hiei) reported no damages, despite being attacked by (58) Blenheim and Wellington.

Unfortunately the Banda Sea squadron was less lucky. [:(]
Attacked by (140) 2E and 4E on the first raid and another (84) in a second wave, the CL Kuma reported heavy damage and fires. I expect that she won’t make it to Koepang. And even if she does she’ll probably be sank at harbor by Port Attack raids.
CA Takao and DD Murasame reported only minor fires.

BURMA

Not much action this turn, but for an Allied LCU that has just appeared NE of Mandalay (see pic).
I’m not particularly worried, because I know the bulk of his forces is engaged in Akyab.

Nevertheless I’ve dispatched two tank Regiments and two segments of the Imperial Division, based in Rangoon, to dispose of the intruders ASAP.

I’m also loading on transports the 35th Bde. The unit was resting in Manila and it’s now in perfect conditions at full strength.
It’ll be sent as reinforcement to Rangoon. I expect it’ll reach Rangoon in a couple of weeks.

I don’t want to run any risk with the defense of Burma. [:-] It’s the gate to Malaya and China. It has to remain a locked gate.

Unfortunately I lost a mine laying sub in Chittagong. A destroyers group was defending the harbor and spotted the sub at night.
A sad loss for the Empire. [:(]

CHINA

As usual, I’m hit by the 59 bug.
Some of the units W of Hengchow are stuck at (59). I’m confident that’ll soon come to see my needs and will resume movement! [:o]

PACIFIC

It’s getting boring around here.

I’m sending a baby KB (CVE + 2 CVL + CS) fishing in the Pacific. We’ll see what fishes she’ll find. [;)]
A replenishment TF will be at her heels.

Miscellanea

The supply stock has stopped decreasing. In the past week it had started decreasing after the launch of several industry expansions: Alf, A6M3a, Topsy, Tojo, Tony, Helen, Mitsubishi engine and Vehicle.

I stopped sending supplies to the border of the Empire from Japan, relying only on SRA to replenish the hot areas for a while.
So far no shortages anywhere. Japan supply level is steadying and will soon restart to increase. Meanwhile SRA can support the already well stocked bases from Burma to the Banda Sea.
