Hi speedy,

Just some drunken comments from another ally....god, it took me 15 seconds to type this right..<hic>
Anyhow, weird how we are mirroring each other in a way....Your SEAC position of November is equal to mine in March; My march Centpac is behind you though, I am only to truk there....but, in mine, the entire KB+ is still out there somewhere, so I tread lightly in the deeper waters where there is no LBA....and, I have Canton, Changsha, Etc...ready for some B-san deployments in 20+ days time....

And our sub depredations continue....at least on my end....new deployment pattern for the submariners....

Oh, sorry to interupt your thread here...carry on, old bean. Back to the beear and Jaeger..Meister....<hicc>.
Sing to the tune of "Man on the Flying Trapeze"
..Oh! We fly o'er the treetops with inches to spare,
There's smoke in the cockpit and gray in my hair.
The tracers look fine as a strafin' we go.
But, brother, we're TOO God damn low...

Hi all,

Hi tabpub - good to hear from you. I do follow your AAR aswell. Ever sicne we spoke about Sub Ops i've been keeping an eye open. My sub war is virtually non-existant now since the only safe waters for Faber are between Japan/China and Formosa. No point in patrolling in heavily guarded waters.

-------------------------

Siam/Malaya -

The enemy force is contained on the rail between Rahaeng and Bangkok:

Ground combat at 31,36

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 102803 troops, 532 guns, 447 vehicles, Assault Value = 2879

Defending force 169053 troops, 407 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2581

Japanese ground losses:
455 casualties reported

This shows rthe detriment of the enemy forces. They now muster 2500AV where as they mustered 6000AV a month or so ago. They will wither and die there once my encircling forces cut of the jungle to the east and SE of them. I will then begin to attack the force and wipe them out.

At the same time forces will move into Malaya. About 2/3 of my combat force are at Songkhia with the other 1/3 4-5 days away.

-----------------------

SRA -

As air search detected 2 x enemy TF's steamed into Jesselton. They encountered a force of PT Boats and the enmey DD's did their job in sinking 10 of them. In return though DD Makigumo was left heavily damaged by a torpedo hit. She was finished off later on in the day by Helldivers based at Jesselton.

The enemy shelled Jesselton but they hit the wrong area and only a few Allied casualties were sustained.

4 x Barges were sunk by Mossie's flying near Palembang.

SS Cavalla sank AK Shanghai Maru with 3 torpedoes 120 miles south of Hanoi.

Brunei was hit hard by B29's leaving 20 x Jill destroyed on the ground.

--------------------------

CentPac -

Iwo Jima is very near to falling into Allied hands now. A massive breakthrough was achieved in the enemy center towards the north of the Island and I expect to take the rest of the main areas tomorrow leaving many enemy caves and strongpoints left to take:

Ground combat at Iwo Jima

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 210345 troops, 1812 guns, 711 vehicles, Assault Value = 4747

Defending force 50377 troops, 363 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 802

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 3

Allied max assault: 4212 - adjusted assault: 5088

Japanese max defense: 697 - adjusted defense: 1450

Allied assault odds: 3 to 1 (fort level 3)

Allied Assault reduces fortifications to 3

Japanese ground losses:
1869 casualties reported
Guns lost 54

Allied ground losses:
1899 casualties reported
Guns lost 50
Vehicles lost 17

Yap was bombed by B29's based at Saipan. 10 x enemy planes were destroyed in the air and on the ground.

6th November 1944 - Iwo Jima falls!

Post by Speedysteve »

Hi all,

Hi T you dumbass[:'(] nope. The game model means air search is broken which means any sub within range of the numerous air bases of Formosa/China/NI is dead within days[;)]

-------------------------

Well that's it! Iwo Jima has fallen. At long last and great cost in shipping and soldiers it is mine. The series of airfields can support P51D's that can cover most of mainland Japan. I will gain air superiority and within a week will begin the destruction of Japan's Industry with B29's covered by P51D Mustangs[:)][8D][:)

Almost 50,000 enemy men still remain in various hideouts. They are now at my mercy though and will be flushed out in due course.

It will be fun to see what effect B29's can have on enemy industry with fighter escort. I expect a massacre.......of Japanese.

My CV's will remain in theatre for a day or 2 until the airfields and port on Iwo Jima are fully operational.

------------------------

Bad wetaher prevented many air raids in Siam and SRA.

My forces are beginning to march upon Alor Star.

My CV's at Jesselton are down to 22 and 45 FLT [:)]

AK Noto Maru was damaged by a sub laid mine at Takao[:)]

Speedy,

Congratualations on capture of Iwo Jima.

Now that it is yours, you might ponder on how best to captilise. One possible train of thought is to make it appear that you are making it the schwerpunckt of an imminent invasion/attack of the Home Islands, thereby hopefully encouraging the penguin to pull back units, whereas in reality you aim for Philippines/Hainan/Formosa.

Speed-- yeppers, am moving to a "mobile" patrol method; it's a pain to work out, but it does seem to work. ID the routes and just patrol the hell out of them.

7th November 1944

Post by Speedysteve »

Hi all,

Hi Alfred - good to see you[:)] If i'm honest I do plan to use it as my springboard for HI invasion! I see no reason why not. I'm upto late 1944. It will be 2-3 months before CentPac troops are ready and ships repaired. During this time I aim to have moved in SRA towards Hainan/Indochina. As such PI will become almost irrelevant. I don't need PI IMO since there are no oil centres to cut off from Japan, I have B29's in range of Japan and I now have a base that can support 200 P51D's support bombng missions on Japan. I guess my ultimate question would be why would I want to go to PI/Formosa now? Why not go for the juggular?[:)]

Hi tabpub - my thinking in my game is that Faber is hardly moving a lot of ships around anymore. He is getting limited oil supply = less fuel = less freedom to move ships. Other than supply convoys to PI or China I see few other routes for his freighters.

-----------------------

Siam/Malaya -

The first bombing mission took off from Victoria Point today to bomb enemy positions around Alor Star. 36th Ind. Mixed Bde positions were bombed. My army is about 15-20 miles away from the enemy positions outside of Alor Star.

-----------------------

SRA -

Jesselton continues to see construction in it. The port is almost level 4 (should be in 2-3 days). Both CV's are reducing FLT damage[:)]

------------------------

CentPac -

Saw the most action today. The Japanese had landed some Kami's at Bonin Islands. Despite heavy Allied raids on the airfields from CV's and by B29's from Saipan (shooting down 28 enemy Nick/Frank and destroying 2 planes on the ground) c.50 Zeke Kamikazis targetted shipping around Iwo Jima. 2 x AK were hit by 10 planes. Both are heavily damaged and on fire. They limped itno Iwo Jima's harbour. Other Zeke's targetted BB Iowa and BB New Jersey but missed or were shot down by AA.

The first day of Allied controlled Iwo Jima saw frenetic activity by engineers as they repaired the runways and airfields. Whilst around the whole island the clump of artliiery fire could be heard as Allied guns pounded enemy striongpoints.

By the end of the day the first Allied planes had touch down on the airfields.....P51D's.......

For a change a look at the total planes losses to date:

On the subject of feinting towards the HI and invading elsewhere, my vot would be : PI--no, Formosa--yes. It should allow you to cut off any attempt to reinforce or evacuate Indochina. Also, from there you can send long-range bombers into the Sea of Japan, and mess up his last open sea lanes. (Can you drop air-laid mines yet?)
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

I agree with Capt here, plus it gives you another avenue for assualt on the HI. The CentPac juggernaut may not need another avenue, but at least it gives your opponent something else to look at/worry about.

I was drunk on Jaegermeister at the time; else I wouldn't have done it, and I was mistaken and stand semi-corrected.
But, back to the chicken comment, I take it that you weren't in '44 when you went on hold; the situation then is actually tough in this 2by3 version of the sub war. The new model PC's that the IJN has are QUITE tough; take a peek at there stats, they have LOTS of the nasty Type 2 DC's. When a sub gets caught by a group of them, it's 50/50 that the sub will be damaged, sometimes quite severely. Any 2nd attack will finish it.

With that, patrolling near IJN bases is difficult, as you can expect that a HK group will charge out when you get spotted, hit you and then run home to reload and repeat on the next spotted sub. So, you have to patrol in the open ocean, find the convoys and pack attack trying to empty the escorts racks.
Plus, as Speed mentioned, with the situation in his simulation, there arent' that many worthwhile targets to go after now. I suppose his boats would be better used as lifeguards and picket ships for his fleet operations.

Now, back to Speedy's war....sorry for the interruption

Speedy,

To broaden your schwerpunckt and ultimately minimize your invasion casualties, you should consider capturing Bonin and in particular Tori Shima. As Tori Shima is only a level 0 AF, it may be only lightly garrisoned. If so, and if it could be easily captured in the immediate future using say existing forces from Iwo Jima, once you built it up to level 2 AF (flood it with seabees), you could then base Thunderbolts and Corsairs to attack Tokyo.

When I call Speedy "chicken" it's actually a reflection of the fact that he's a very good buddy of mine. He's also an acknowledged expert on submarine use, so one would assume that he'd find a way to do what he said he wouldn't.

Hi all,

Hi Capt. - I can see a benefit to Formosa but wont my SRA landing at Hainan accomplish the same effect? As for air dropping mine's - it's something I have never considered or talked about with Faber. What do you all think? I know in game they can't be intercepted by CAP. Would it be gamey to use them or should I limit myself to 1 x B29 BG etc?

Hi tabpub - no worries mate. Feel free to post [:)] Yes my subs are basically being used on mining duty - 10 x SS per TF. and are also deployed in offensive operations as screens/pickets/lifegaurds. I really feel, as you say, in my game the lack of decent merchant targets (TK) with no place to get oil for Faber makes it not worthwhile to risk my Subs against a 7 point AK with much greater risk to my Subs.

Hi Alfred - Thank. Some valid points there. Bonin has 65,000 men though and I expect to be similarly defended like Iwo Jima. To tke there will cost me another 50ish ships due to CD/mines. Also my men on Iwo Jima will need 30-60 days to recover before any invasion. I don't feel it would be worth it in terms of time delay and more importantly cost of ships in precious MSW/DMS/AP/AK/LST etc.

Tori Shima is interesting though. I know from recon and SigInt there is a Ind. Mixed Bde there and 11,000 men. Hmm. Something to think of. Thanks.

----------------------

Siam/Malaya -

Heavy bombing on enemy supply/support troops at Bangkok and at Alor Star.

My main force has reached Alor Star and will bombard and probe the enemy defences tomorrow. I have c.1800AV here with another 1000 on the way (uptto 2 weeks march away).

-----------------------

SRA -

My CV's are still doing good. Down to 44 and 5 FLT now[:)]

No real action in this theatre for now except my bombing of many bases in Borneo, Sulawesi etc.

An enemy SC/CV TF is nearing Jesselton again. CAP is alerted. During the day 6 x Frances tried to attack but were shot down by the 30 strong Mustang/Corsair/Hellcat CAP (what a set of planes[:)])

A small enemy convoy was spotted at Biak! Mitchells put a bomb into AK Shoryu Maru.

------------------------

CentPac -

Iwo Jima is fully operational now and a further P51D Sqn has flown in. An DE and LST sank due to damage today.

CV Yorktown TF is heading back to PH for R&R.

Bonin Islands plasted by CV and B29 air. 20 enemy planes destroyed on the ground. B29's will rest now to prepare for HI bombing again..............
