Strategy game for the WitP community

Post by scout1 »

Guys,

I recently purchased AGEods American Civil War and it gives a growing sense of a real keeper. I personally always preferred hex based grand scale games, but the region system they've implemented kinda grows on you and actually for the time period is appropriate. Has a GREAT deal of depth much like WitP and I haven't heard of any leaders disappearing [;)]

If you're game, you may want to give this one a second look.

I agree. I recently finished the grand campaign against the AI, and I was surprised at how "epic" the game was. It does start to feel like WITP once you get to 1862 and you have lots and lots of units on the map. And the leadership/organization game-within-the-game is just terrific.

I'm enjoying the game as well, AI is ok, I am playing on easiest now so I don't get overwhelmed.
Alot of fun and plenty of strategy.
It doesn't make any sense, Admiral. Were we better than the Japanese or just luckier?

I agree, the AI is OK; good as AI's go. But in my own campaign game, I gave it only one slight advantage -- a slight boost to its ability to pierce Fog of War. And I gave it extra time to "think." At that setting, it put up a plausible and interesting fight, and I didn't beat it until late 1864. My biggest complaint was that it frequently went into battle with suboptimal command organization, something that may have been addressed in the recent AI patch; I haven't tried it yet.

Next time I'll ratchet up the Difficulty level. That could compensate for the command-organization problem the AI has (or at least used to have).

What I liked most about my game is that it played out quite plausibly, historically-speaking. I've posted an AAR over at the AGEOD forums.

Sounds interesting. Do you have a link for it?

after reading this thread I checked out the demo and then bought it last weekend.
It still has some quirks like some odd weather (e.g. snow in Florida [8|]) but overall it quickly stole some precious time I'd planned to use on more 'important' things.
From my perspective it has two big advantages over WitP:
1. Its limited timeframe, ~100 turns for a full campaign - not such a huge commitment compared to a full WitP campaign.
2. Its user interface. Easy to handle and very informative, with mouse-over tooltips on basically everything on and off the map, also telling you what the reasons might be that certain operations currently don't work for you and things like that - very nice.

My conclusion: Easy to learn, easy to handle, hart to master!

Funny, I bought the same game a couple of weeks ago and have been thinking the same thing. I enjoy it quite a bit - and in much the same way I like WITP. It's enjoyable and playable - sucks you in right away, and it's nuanced enough to keep you there for a while. (I've been OK with the AI so far - though I've also noticed the AI's often poor organization of stacks.)
