possible error in this hex

Post by randell765 »

Frank,

I am possibly having an error in this hex. On preplacing for CP(Germany), I put a hq and some b units on hex 27,16. I then try to attack a Russian city at 28,16. It will not let me attack even with the hq being activated, anyone here is welcome to try or I can send a save game, am I just missing something?

I tried this and was able to successfully attack hex 28,16 from 27,16 as the Germans without issue. Lodz fell.

I am not sure what happened, maybe it is a one time error, I can start up another game, but I am telling ya, when it was time to move troops, it gave me arrows to go everywhere but Lodz.

I will try again, worst case is I will take a picture and post it here.

Just a quick point here which may not apply to this situation but it is a good a place as any to bring it up.....

You have 2 HQ's side by side, and you activate only one of them for control of both stacks. When you try to move the units of the non-activated HQ stack, you can notice that the yellow arrows will not show a path to an enemy controlled hex. The reason is because, when you selected the stack with the non-activated HQ, the HQ unit itself cannot move into an enemy hex because it is not activated. If you cycle to the first activated corps, you will then see that you can advance the stack.....

So in short, HQ's cannot activate HQ's so if you do not move the non-activated HQ off the top, you cannot move the stack into an enemy position........

Thank you, seriously... thank you.  I actually found this out last night at 3am, did I mention this game is addicting? [:)]

But up until this point, I was clicking on the unactivated hq with move stack and it wouldn't allow me to attack.
BTW, forgive my ignorance but I tried to copy and paste a picture yesterday and it wouldn't let me, how do you guys get pictures to appear in your threads?  Copy to word doc?  But then what do you do?

Hi randell765,

As J P said, if you have a (non-activated) HQ on top of your stack, right-click it to cycle to a corps, then select the "move to" command to attack.

If this was not the case, it is possible you lacked sufficient readiness to attack. All hexes take a certain amount of readiness to move into (usually 2 for clear terrain in good weather; rough terrain and/or foul weather increase this cost). If you lack this readiness, you cannot move into an enemy-occupied hex to attack.

Readiness is replenished at 4 pts. per impulse in clear terrain/good weather/100% supply.

It is also possible you were overstacking the target hex, trying to "move" too much into it. This can happen if your opponent is shifting troops into and out of the target hex. The AI apparently regards it as unoccupied by either side, and enforces the stacking limit on both until combat is resolved. However, this is just an observation on my part; I have no empirical evidence of the game code to verify it conclusively.
