Yeah, I've had that Do'h! moment before. I've also planned an elaborate offensive, taken time to get the readiness high and forces prepped, only to realize during the orders phase that I forgot to activate a critical leader!

No, but in my game I just started with Marc420, guess what I forgot. No Belgium chocolate for the German Army. I did one better I didn't assign my air units for the Germans either.

I think I can top all of those. Bismark and I are trying to run through several turns to get acclimated, but when I got his email back for the first Orders Phase, none of my HQs are Activated. It sorta puts a crimp on my overwhelming German offensive. I am not sure how the Activation Phase got past me.[&:] I think we may need to restart.

Three times in a row against the AI!!  I ended up playing the third game into 1915.  The salient I had into France was hanging out to dry but I thought, what the hell,  let's see how the AI handles this.  I was surrounded on three sides and pushed back into Germany.

My second game, I had it all figured out, mobilized, got everything together for my push through Belgium and Luxembourg, and realized I had forgotten to declare war.  I just quit and started over.

I did it twice, out of 4 starts as the CP. The glass is half full, right?

Yes - but it doesn't help vs PBEM....you're gotta stick with what you've done...not what you wish you've done!! [8|][:-]

I just tried that after a particularly wild (and top secret deployment). Unfortunately, after saving the game it was in the activation mode-I wasn't done with the strategic phase yet. Am I correct to say that the "strategic phase" should be complete before saving a set up?
This was a first time effort, so perhaps something else happened I missed.

No, not saved game, saved setup.  They're separate buttons.  Save setup (and load setup) is available during the Mobilization phase.  If you have a setup you like just save it and that way you can load it at the beginning of each game instead of having to go through the whole placement again.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't notice the save set-up button.

Yes....it's now Feb-Mar 1915. I did eventually read the manual and work out how to get diplomacy points...waited for a further two Strategic moments before I actually got them...then realised I didn't do it again!!

As it was, it was too late anyway...France was giving me a hiding  and my troops had to be moved....I have all bust a small garrison watching the Belgian border.

Now I've seem to have worked out the mechanics of production, I have a better idea of what to do.

I also keep forgetting to activate HQs...and I didn't know I had to activate an HQ to move in enemy territory....I thought you only had to activate to attack!

Anyway, Russia seems to be getting lots of points as their army seems to be getting stronger (or at least more units showing up.

I have to say, the AI is doing a very reasonable job in allocating it's units. Seems to be shoring up where it needs to at the expense of "quieter" fronts.

Never forgot to declare war on Belgium but rather to many times forgot Luxembourg. Also call me thick but I have only just found out how to get the brits into Belgium.

I think it's going to be a loooong learning curve for me.
